5th Grade - Christmas Break 12/2012 - Time Lapse

5th Graders,
Ever want to see all of New York City in 5 minutes? Central Park change colors during the Fall in less than 3 minutes? New York in both day and night, at the same time?

Time lapse, that's how!

What is "time lapse" you ask?

So, what exactly is Time Lapse?
According to Wikipedia, “Time-lapse photography is a cinematography technique whereby the frequency at which film frames are captured (the frame rate) is much lower than that which will be used to play the sequence back. When replayed at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing.”
Generally, a video comprises of 24-30 frames of photos per second (called fps). At this rate, our eye is not able to identify the individual frames and we perceive them as a continuous stream of images. So when we watch a 3-minute video on YouTube, technically we have seen 24fps x 180 secs = 4320 frames or images. So, if you set the time-lapse recording for 4 seconds and record a 40-second video, the resulting time-lapse video will be of 10 seconds and thus time flies by, super fast.
In other words, why wait for 12 hours from sunrise to sunset, by using time-lapse, watch the sun set it in a matter of minutes.

 Your assignment:

Choose one, or more, of the videos below...

New York City in 5 minutes

I saw Central Park changing colors,
New York day and night, and The beauty of the natural world. I thought the videos were pretty good! I saw lots of central park's trees, I saw half of New York at daytime and half at nighttime. Yes, it gives me a different perspective. I think time lapse is cool. I've seen random time lapse videos before on video games, too!
If I were to make a time lapse video, it would be about sking, probably.

I watched the video Fall. I think that the video was very pretty and colorful. It showed me what technology can do to make beautiful videos. in the video, I saw the leaves changing color in fall. But they didn't take time like they do in real life. They changed in only a few minutes. There were a lot of beautiful trees that I thought were very beautiful but one stood out in particular. It was a bright reddish-orange one and it was very round and bushy. Time lapse gives me a different perspective in a way. I live upstate where there are lots of trees and every fall I see the trees all the time. But the video showed me all the colors and trees in fall so quickly. I think That time lapse photography is really cool. I kind of seems like what it would be like to be going into the future.

I watched the video called A tour through China.
I thought the video was amazing. It was very unique. The way the camera captured the scene was very inviting. It made me feel as if I was in China. It made me feel like I was traveling the water. It was a truly amazing. It took my breath away.
What I saw was, amazing. There were so many things I learned. One thing I noticed was China has a lot of of statues. A majority of them were dragons. That leads me to think, that in China the dragon heavily worshiped.I noticed that China has a big population. There were many people walking around. One thing that stood out to me was the lights. There were all different colors. That really stood out to me. They shone was as if they were they the star. They shone in such strange was but it was amazing. that stood out out me the most.
The time lapse gives a me a different perspective in a way. In China there is different time. I the time goes by faster. So they might move a little bit fast then we. This changes my perspective how fast time goes in the U.S.A.
I thought the photographs were amazing they had so much detail in them. The videos were one of a kind. they were special and brilliant.

I watched the video about Central park in the fall. It looked so beutifull with all of the different colors changing.
In the begining of the video you could see the light of the sun moving on the ground. You could also see the wind blowing the branches on the trees. The video showed me a different perspective thet see when I go to Central park. When I go I don't see all of the colors changing.
The time lapse showed me a different prespective because everything was changing and it was going so fast. When I watched the video I could see how all of the colors in the park were chaning but, when I go to Central park I could never see the trees changing colors.
It was amazing how everything inth e park was changing so quickly. When everthing was changingit toke only a few minutes but if youn really go to central park it would take a while to see all of the colors changing.

I watched Central Park Changing Colors and The beauty of the natural world. I thought that they were both interesting because they made me think of things in a way that I had never thought before.

In Central Park Changing Colors I saw the season changing from summer to fall and from fall to winter. It was amazing to see it happen so quickly. In the Beauty of the natural world there was a time lapse of the moon that was sailing toward the horizon and looked like it was going to crash into the buildings like a meteor.

I didn't think that the time lapse gave me a different perspective but I thought it was cool.

I think it was cool. I would like to see time lapse photography of food rotting or a Christmas tree getting decorated.

A first the Manhattan project didn't make sense, but I looked at the assignment again and, I realized it's a time lapse of Manhattan. It's a whole day of different places in Manhattan in fast forward mode which is what a time lapse is. I think the video is tying to say, Manhattan is a hard working place. The video gives a whole different perspective of Manhattan to me and most likely anybody who watches it. Honestly before the video I thought Manhattan was a filthy place where they don't care if they live in a pile of trash. But that's not who they are they are actually hard working people who work to live. That was the point of the video in my opinion. Manhattan is now a partially good place to me.

In the Manhattan video it felt like I was driving through Manhattan. It was amazing. Some of the things I saw before. Some I didn't. Now I have. Plus Manhattan is only one borough away from me so I could go a lot. If you live in California or any other state far from New York this is the closest you would probably get to Manhattan. Everything was amazing.
But if I wanted to make my own time lapse it would be me traveling somewhere or the process of teeth rotting from too much soda. That is what I think is a time lapse.

The beauty of the natural world:
The natural world is beautiful in so many ways.its is a creation of amazement and scientist are yet to explain how the world was made. The video show how beautiful and wonderful the world is. it show the Mountains with snow on it.also how beautiful the rainbow is.It also show the history of man kind through the magnificent building that were made like the coliseum. Time lapse is really cool cause it shows pictures in a fast paste like a moive.

A Manhattan project:
A Manhattan project was amazing to me because the video showed me how the city looks with real life inside of it.You get to witness what living in the city is like without actually going to the city.I felt as if I was walking through Manhattan.
Something I seen that I think I really want to share was when you see the traffic lights. Why? Well when you looked close enough, they were blinking green, red, and yellow various times which showed me how much time was passing in that small scene.
I think that A Manhattan project definitely gave me a different prospective on everything! It gave me a different prospective on life, time, and the world around me.
I thought the video was amazingly well and A Manhattan project has inspired me to appreciate the scenery around me because no where/one else has the same backyard as yours.
I really liked A Manhattan project and I want to thank Mr.casal for putting this video on the blog and for giving me this amazing assignment.

I saw Central Park changing of the colors. I thought it was very beautiful when the colors started to change. I felt like I was right there actually watching it change color. My favorite part was the reflection of the sun shinning on the trees. It made me see Manhattan in an whole different way.

I saw the video of New York day and night. It showed me that New York is beautiful when people are not trashing it. It showed the tree's and the life in New York how people live it.

In the video about China it also showed the life in China people in cars and bike and people selling things to make money. That is what I saw in those two videos.

I thought the video I watched (New York in 5 minutes) was awesome. Time lapse gave me a new perspective of New York. I always thought that the train station wasn't the hotspot for all New Yorkers. The reason I thought that the video was awesome was because I found out the beauty of New York. My favorite part in the video is when I saw the women taking the yoga class. That was my perspective of the video, New York in 5 minutes.

I watched a tour through china. I loved the video. I saw lights booming every were. What stood out to me the most was how New York and China are so much alike but we are on different sides of the world. The lapse is different because if I went to China I could not have seen all of that in five minutes. I like time lapse because it allows you to see everything that goes on in twenty four hours. A really fun time lapse would be a school day.

Central Park changing colors was magnificent!I saw red, white, green, brown and colors you could not even imagine.i saw sunlight reflecting on trees, flowers, grass, buildings, and water. This video made me think about why people should take care of mother nature. Some of the ways that we can help our earth is by watering flowers and trees. Another way is by not littering. Finnaly we can help the earth by not wasting food or water.I also saw shadows of trees and how the trees are always changing colors. Finally i noticed that the light from the sun was changing from light to dark.

I watched New York City in 5 minutes.
I thought that the video was very interesting because it was showing what was happening in New York City in fast motion.
The things that stood out were the people, the clouds, the buildings and lights because they were in the center of the picture.
It doesn't change the perspective because the things in the video don't change their look, they just move fast.
I thought that the video was good and it was made by recording a what a scene, then playing that faster so you can make a time lapse video.

I saw A tour though China. I thought the city landscape was phenomenal! I saw beautiful mountains and breathtaking art and nearly impossible architecture! It didn't give me a different perspective on anything except that it emphasized the saying "time flies." I thought it was a complex piece of technological art and obviously needed effoft to compose it.

I watched the video of Central Park changing colors. All of those colors made me feel warm inside. I thought that the video was very interesting and beautiful. Also, the video was very well thought of. Some things I saw in the video are pretty trees. I also saw some grass growing. The thing that stood out was the clouds in the sky. It looked so cool. Time lapse does give me a different perspective. I think that the idea of time lapse video/photography is really awesome. Maybe I should try to do that sometime.

The video that I watched was, A Tour Through China. I thought that it was very cool because of the tall buildings and sculptures. What I saw which kind of surprised me was McDonalds, really pretty city lights, and a building that looked like it was made of glass and wood. I thought that the photography was good, and the video showed me lots of places in China that I never saw before.

I watched Central Park changing colors. I thought was very cool because it showed me that things like leaves changing color doesn't just happen, it takes a long time and unless you want to stand on front of a tree for a month, time lapse is the only thing that will show you this.

Emma H. said...

I watched the Central Park changing colors video. I thought it was really cool the way they could capture the footage and make it look like it was changing all at once. The video showed pictures of all the leaves turning pretty colors and falling down. As the camera was moving, the trees were turning red and orange. Time lapse makes you see things that take a long time but in short period. I think that time lapse photography in general is really interesting.

I watched the video of new york city Night And Day .i saw how the people in new york city can be so calm when they have something to do . For example i saw people riding bikes with friends ,talking with friends exploring the beautyful city . I also saw people driving their cars on the beautyful higways at night when their lights are on . It was a beautyful view that is why i chose the video of New York city night and day.

I watched two videos, “Central Park Changing Colors” and “The Beauty of the Natural World”.

In the video about Central Park I enjoyed how each tree had a unique pace of change. The part that stood out to me was when the summer came, the pond was calm, but in the fall you could see waves splashing in the pond.

“The Beauty of the Natural World” had pictures that cannot be seen by humans. For example, have you ever seen the Golden Gate Bridge with clouds swallowing the bridge on a sunny day? My favorite part was viewing the Aurora Borealis in the winter sky. The time lapse gives me a different perspective because you watch the seasons go by in less than five minutes. I would have never noticed that some mountain tops have no snow, while that all the snow is near the bottom.

I enjoyed time lapse because I could see the beauty of the year in just a few minutes.

The beauty of the natural world

I liked the video "The beauty of the natural world." It was very interesting because you got see the world in fast motion and every thing looked cool and pretty. Some of things I saw included mountains, cars, boats, lights, buildings a bridge and there was even a castle.

The time lapse did give me a different perspective of the world because I saw parts of our city and other places like the forest. What I thought of the photography and the video was that it must have taken a lot of time and hard work. In conclusion, this video was very interesting.

The video I watched was called "The Beauty of the Natural World". I thought the video was crazy, weird, fast, and dizzying. I didn't really get it. In the video, I saw a lot of people walking, cars zooming, fireworks booming, waterfalls gushing, the aurora moving, clouds moving, and the sun, moon, and stars rising and falling. They were all in fast motion. What stood out to me most was the car lights going super super super fast and the aurora moving really fast instead of just sitting in the sky. Time lapse gave me a different perspective of what I saw. I think time lapse videos are strange, but pretty cool too.

I saw the video "Beauty Of The World". This video was interesting because it shows how fast life moves from day to night. We think that life moves slow because in the moment we are not realizing what is going on. The scenes of cars moving was cool because it looked like a bunch of lasers moving back and forth. Time lapse does give me a different perspective because everything moves faster than usual. It also allows me to see in great detail what happens in a 24 hour period. I personally think Time Lapse is a great tool to see how quickly life moves and shows that time in general moves faster than you really think.

The video I watched was "The Beauty of the Natural World". The video was amazing! There were stuff that we never get to see here in NYC, Like mountains, crystal clear water, an aurora, and many more. My favorite was the aurora because it was so colorful and beautiful. Then there were things that we see all the time in NYC like, cars rushing by and bridges.
Time lapse really does give me a different perspective. Time lapse and the video I watched is just amazing and beautiful. I have no negative comments.

I hope everyone had a wonderful break and got everything they wanted for Christmas! :)

I watched the Manhattan Project. I thought the video was very interesting. There were two seperated parts. There was the day half and then the night half. I saw the clouds moving very fast. It almost looked like a storm! What really stood out was the amount of people in Manhattan. I saw thousands, maybe a few million people in that video! Time lapse gives me a way different perspective because I didn't think Manhattan was all beautiful at all. But when you see ALL of Manhattan in one day just sped up it will look nicer. The photography in there was for sure proffesional. That was worth a second watch.

I watched the video "Central Park changing colors." I liked the fact that it had lots of different colors like red, orange, pink, yellow, and brown. Also, there were many trees and many leaves that were changing colors in the video. I noticed how the sunlight hit the leaves and really brought out the color in the leaves. I also saw how the different shadows were made with sunlight because of the different positions of the sun at different times of day.The time lapse didnt' really give me a different perspective of how leaves change throughtout the seasons. The time lapse has shown me how fast time itself moves and that has made me think about enjoying the time that I have, because you never know what is going to happen.

I watched The Manhattan Project.I liked how it showed everything that happens in Manhattan.I also liked how it showed all the big buildings and how different some buildings are than others.I saw a lot of people moving around and a lot of big buildings. What really stood out to me was all the people on the street rushing to work or where ever they need to go to.Another thing that stood out to me was the people playing music in the subway.Time lapse gives me a different perspective of the video and I think it looks like a bunch of pictures put together and make it a movie it looks too fast for somebody to just film it.I think time lapse is really cool.I wonder how they put the pictures together to make a video.

Then you saw all the leaves changing from no color and green to orange, yellow, and red. You could see the time lapse which was the water moving and then the leaves changing colors. In the time lapse, at the beginning the dark became bright sun.

The title of the video that I watched was called “New York City in 5 minutes”.
I think the video was pretty cool because it was in a time lapse format. I always watch videos that have recording/movie format. I have never watched in video in time lapse format.
I saw New York underground and on the surface. Something that stood out to me was that it looked like regular recording without time lapse.
No, time lapse didn’t give me a different perspective because it looked just like a regular recording.
I think time lapse is great because it is just like recordings.
In conclusion, I learned that time lapse photography is a technique where frequency of film frames are captured in much lower frame rate, so that we can watch the sequence of repeated photos in same location. When it is played at a regular speed, time appeared to be moving faster and thus lapsing.

Central Park Changing colors

I loved the video because it shows seasons changed from spring to fall and maybe winter because at one point here were no leaves in the trees at all. Usually this takes months and no one really notices the sky and clouds moving because they move really slowly. But in this video they move very fast. Also i think the shadows stood for the time because when ever there were shadows and light there was a change.

The time lasp was really cool because it speeds up life and nature. It would be cool to that with my summer vacation. to scrunch up a week into 5 minutes.
