4th Grade - Christmas Break 12/2012 - Climb Mt. Everest

4th Graders,
Last year you did an assignment during the February vacation in which you looked at 360 degree panoramas. Remember, a panorama is a wide-angle look at something. 360 degrees is a full circle...

You were able to look at a monument or city from every angle. You got a birds-eye view, a view you've never seen before.

This year we will use the same technology, high quality panoramic images, to climb Mt. Everest...

Your assignment:

Read this article ...

... and then go to the Glacier Works site and you will see a panorama featuring Mr. Everest. Click on the panoramic image

When you open the panorama, explore it, more the image around, look up & down, left & right. Use all the tools at the bottom of the image to explore:

Post a comment with:
  • What did you think when you first say the large picture of Mt. Everest?
  • The things you observed
  • Did you find the mountain climbers on the glacier?
    • if so, where were they & how many could you see
  • Did you see the base camp?
  • Your thoughts & ideas about the website & picture in general

Enjoy the visuals & have a great week off!

Remember - Comment as "Name/URL" and use your first name and last initial (proper capitalization, no URL)- please respond in full and complete sentences - double check your work before posting your comment.

At first look I thought it was just the very top of the mountain.I could see some colored things near what I thought looked like a path, I zoomed in and they turned out to be tents (the base camp)! I could see some people - almost all of them were near the base camp. I think it must have been hard to make this site. Part of the mountain looks hard to climb. I also think there is a lot of snow even at the bottom. I think this is a cool site.

The mountain climbers were on the mountain and some were on the ground.Yes I did see the base campers.

When I hear the words Mount Everest I think of large snowy mountains with snow boarders snow boarding down the side of the mountain. I was able to make three observations. First, although it looks hot in the picture of Mt. Everest, the snow is still covering a majority of the mountain. Second, they are many rocks around Mt. Everest that are probably pieces of rock that broke off the mountain. Third, the rocks on the mountain aren't only brown they are also yellow. Those are my observations about the picture. I indeed saw the base camp. The climbers put up a lot yellow tents to sleep in. I didn't see any people actually climbing but, I saw around thirteen people in the base. My thoughts are that I really like the picture, it makes me feel like I am in a helicopter above Mt. Everest. And to conclude this blog, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

When I think of the words MT Everest I think of a large snowy mountain covered with rocks and theres tons of snow and its really cold and people watching climbers climb up the mountain and try to get to the top.I did see the camp and the climbers on the ground but I didn't seen any climbing the mountain. The camp was yellow and bright.I loved looking at that picture because it looked like I was a bird looking at MT Everest.Bye and MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!

I think website is COOL because this website helps you look at places that you have never been to. Those are thoughts about the Mount Everest.

When I first saw the picture I thought it looked like an easy mountain path. But when I started to zoom in and see things... I saw rocks that used to look like pebbles now looked like 8ft tall!!!!!! I did find the mountain climbers on the glacier. The parts of the mountain they were climbing so steep they could've slipped right off the mountain. They were on a path that went straight through the mountains. There were 11 of the climbers. I saw the base camp, too. But at first I thought the camp were colored pebbles because of how small it seemed.

I think the website is a genius idea. It lets you get to know everest without having to actually go there wich is great for some people.!.!. The pictures were AMAZING!!! Whoever took them is PEERRFEECCTT!!

I agree with the athor of the article that the safest way to visit mount everest is through the photo. This is a cool site. I was able to find the base camp with all the tents set up. As you go around on the bottom of the mountin near the base camp it looks pretty easy to walk around but as you go up the mountin it looks pretty cold and dangerous. Happy holidays Erik V

When I first saw the picture of Mount Everest, I thought that if I wanted to climb Mount Everest it would be very easy. But then, I zoomed in and saw all the bumpy rocks. Thats when i knew it would not be easy. I did not see any mountin climbers on Mount Everest. I did see the base camp though. I'm almost positive that the climbers were in the tents. Maybe one day I may climb Mount Everest, Who knows? To conclude this paragraph I will say MERRY CHRISMAS, HAPPY HANUKKAH AND KWANZAA. ALSO HAPPY NEW YEAR, SEE YOU IN 2013 MR.CASAL!!!!!!

When I first saw the large picture of Mt. Everest I thought of big iceberg and snow boarding. I observed lots of things like camp site, ice with rocks and finally people hanging their clothes. I looked and looked and I didn’t see the mountain climbers on the glacier. The base camp was pretty colorful and neat to see. I thought the whole thing was pretty cool because I saw Mt. Everest up close and it felt like I was there.

When I saw the large picture of Mt. Everest I thought it was very big, but it also looks very dangerous and scary. There are bumpy parts, sharp places you can step on and slippery snow. I observed Mt. Everest is very dangerous to be climbing on because you can fall in the snow and fall off the mountain. I clearly saw four mountain climbers in a space with no snow, only a little bit of rocks and what looks like lots of sand. I think I saw two base camps. One camp was by the mountain climbers. It had buildings with both blue and green roofs, and yellow tents. The other base camp had a lot of tents that were mostly yellow. The website had details about Mt. Everest and I will like to see more people on the mountain. I also like the view of Mt. Everest.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

when I saw that picture it looked like just a path that people could clinb just ealily. but when I zoomed in on the picture I seriously fell out of my seat! I was observing WAY to long becaue I think I was observing the picture for about an hour! but the odd part about it aws that i saw no people climbing the mountain. but i definatly saw the base camp. that was what made me fall out of my seat. it was tiny compared to the HUGE mountain. i cant belive technoligy these days. they've improved massivly since 3rd grade.
hope everybody has a good christmas and a happy new year.:)

I have heard people say that it is really big and that its the tallest mountain on earth. So based on that particular information I thought Mt. Everest is a regular mountain but when I saw the picture and I zoomed in, it was amazing. I did see mountain climbers, I saw about 82 mountain climbers. Some were hard to see but I found them (maybe not all of them they were all over the mountain!) I observed a lot of rocky cliffs and mountains which impressed me because I never thought it could be that rocky! I did see the base camp, it was huge. I never thought that some camp could be that big. I did not know that I can learn so much in one website like this!

The first thing I thought when I looked at this view of Mount Everest was "what it would be like if i was one of the hundred climbers climbing Mount Everest?" I saw both buildings and tents in the base camps along the edge of the mountain. One of the things I observed was that all of the base camps were in a row, not a long distance from each other. I think I saw climbers on the glaciers, though I am not positive. Overall, I would recommend this website to anyone who would not want to leave the comfort of their home, but still explore Mount Everest.

Jack S. said...

When I first saw the picture of Mt. Everest, I thought it looked like a really small mountain. But when I looked more closely at the mountain, and saw the tiny people, I realized the mountain is huge! I observed that the top of the mountain on the far left, looks like a trapezoid. I also observed that there is more dirt and rock on the left and right sides, and there is more snow on the middle of the picture. I also observed that in the center there is a path of snow and ice, that looks like a road. I read a comment underneath the article, that helped me find the climbers. The comment said “Yep, no sense trying to get any work done. You can clearly see the climbers on the face of Lhotse and on the left side of the Khumba ice falls.” I found around 30 people. I saw the base camp, on the left of the “ice road”. I think that website is pretty helpful to see how Everest looks. I definitely would not climb Mount Everest. I like to scroll around, zoom in and out, and look at the mountains on the website.

At first I thought the picture was of a tiny model of Mount Everest.I also thought that some of the huge cliffs I could step over. Then I started zooming in and I realized that the real objects were huge! I did see the base camp. I did not see any climbers or other camps. I observed that a lot of the snow is in the middle of the picture and the dirt is on the sides. I bet it is cold either way though! I thought the picture was taken from a good angle and it showed Mount Everest well. I thinkthe website is AWESOME because it allows people to explore Mount Everest in the comfort of their home. I LOVED this assignment!

When i first saw the picture of Mount Everest i thought it was empty. I saw a lot of snow so i think it is cold there.
I observe that it has a lot of snow, is rocky and is very very big.
When i looked at the picture i did not see any people. Then i zoomed in and saw a lot but not to many people.
I counted the people i saw and there were 22 of them.
When i saw the base camp when not zoomed in it looked like apart of the ground. Then when i zoomed in it stared to look like something, i zoomed in a little more and i saw the base camp.
I like the website because when you first go on it you usually see a picture. And your allowed to click on it and when you click it, it makes the picture go side to side, up and down, and allowing you to zoom in.

When I first looked at the picture of Mt.Everest I saw a bunch of snow, dirt, mountains, and trash.
I observed the mountains on Mt.Everest a little closer and I realized that they were very ROCKY. I did not find ANY mountain climbers on the glaciers.
I did see tents and climbers at the base camp as I zoomed in closer. At first I thought the base camp was TRASH! But it wasn't.
I liked all the features on the website. You could use such features as the zoom in, zoom out, and full screen buttons. I wish that they could make the picture 360 degrees.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

When I look at the picture of mount Everest I see big mountains, snow, and rocks. Every time I climbed higher and higher all the way to the top I felt like a giant. It gets very cold at night. When I got near the top I had to wear a oxygen mask because I couldn't breath. I had to wear four jackets because it gets very cold . Finally I was at the top of Mount Everest. I could see the clouds, and the big blue sky.
Happy NewYear.

When I first saw Mt. Everest, It felt like I was looking at 2 different
mountains. Half of it was filled with snow, half of it was EXTREMELY rocky. When I saw the climbers, I sort of felt attached to them,Because they had completed there hiking quest, to climb the highest land mountain in the world. Their base felt like a city, or a town in somewhere like New Zealand. When I saw the base had the Switzerland,I understood. Well to finish this up, One of the things I want to do before i die, Is climb Mount Everest

As I opened the picture of Mt. Everest I saw 1 group of people, a couple big camp site, snow and at least 50 tents. When I first saw it my brother took over the computer and asked what I was doing and he mostly saw the camp site. My mom did not know what one was Mt. Everest so I just want with the flow the only thing I wish was you could look back behind Mt. Everest. I thought that they were tiny rocks at first but when I saw the people the first thing I thought was that it is huge. The End.

When I first looked at the picture I saw that it looked like it was split in half, one side really rocky and the other side snowy. When I looked around everything was snowy. I played around with it more and saw what looked liked blue bags, but it turned out to be a base camp. To me it looks like a toy village. Then I saw two people on the edge of a cliff. All of the mountains seem super steep. I just saw what looked like a cave that was a free fall if you went inside. It was covered with giant icicles. My last thought was that climate change really took an affect on Mt. Everest. The glacier that runs down the center of the picture does not have any more snow.

Happy Holidays!

When I first saw that large picture of Mt. Everest, I thought that it was amazing. I thought that it was amazing because it was so big and beautiful. Also, it was very, very, white. When I was looking at it, I saw lots of things. One thing I saw was the base camp. The base camp was very big. Another thing I saw were hikers. They were small compare to the mountain. And I saw some people at the base camp. And the last thing I observed, were the glaciers. They were coved in very thick ice. I saw at least 12 hikers on the glaciers. There were some people by the base camp. And, some were about halfway up the mountains. I saw the base camp. There were lots and lots of tents. Also, there were about 5 hikers there. The base camp stretched very far, and was very big. I think that the website was cool. I liked the idea of creating a 360 panorama image of Mt. Everest especially since there are many people who can’t see, or hike this massive mountain.

When I first looked at Mt, Everest I thought that it was gigantic! It was at least five times bigger than I thought it would be! I observed the base camp, it was as many times bigger as the mountain than I thought it would be, there must have been over two thousand people camped there!
The first group of mountain climbers I saw were in a long line. They were
climbing up a long steep half hill of deep snow. The second group of mountain climbers I saw were walking down a flat part of the mountain. I saw three of them first, but than I noticed a fourth mountain climber about ninety feet behind them.
I liked the picture but I wish you could move the camera around more. I also wish you could be able to control all the camera movements with.

When I saw the picture of Mt. Everest I thought to myself, "How did these climbers climb this mountain??" I couldn't believe how Mother Nature formed that mountain range! I saw the base camp at the bottom of the mountain where all of the climbers hang out. I noticed at base camp there were A LOT of tents, and I even noticed that there were a pair of pants drying on a rock! There were also a lot of prayer flags hung all throughout base camp which reminded me of a spider web but much more colorful and bigger. Well, I found two mountain climbers that looked like they were just starting to head up the mountain. Yes, I definitely saw Base Camp, how could you miss it!! I thought the picture was really life-like, it was almost like I was there. I loved the web site and I hope you give us home work from this site more often!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

When I first saw Mt. Everest I thought that climbing it would be a life threatening mission...like Mission Impossible! The mountains are HUGE! I explored the panoramic view and zoomed into the base camp to see the people. I didn't see any people on the glaciers. Looking at the mountains made me think of going to the top and yodeling just liKe a boy named Rudi did in a book I read called "Banner in the Sky" by James Ullman. I loved the website because it let me experience something I don't have the chance to see. The wide variety of views let's me personally interact with the mountain in ways I can't do on my own. It was awesome!

I saw that one hole could fit like 25 tents! After I saw those tents it looked about the size of 100000 football fields!I saw some other base camps on the other side of the mountain. But I really wanted to see the mountain climbers so I looked on some glacers but then I saw some people right near the base camp. But it really looked like it was only a little bit of a walk. That mountain is huge!!!!

The first was this huge gray cloud in the corner of the picture. The second thing was a rock avalanche.it was interesting, because i usually only see avalanches in cartoons. the last thing was a group of people who i looked at for a moment and then lost them.i would guess there were about 15 of them.the picture and the incredible detail in it made me feel like i was really there. i never thought a picture could be so amazing and real.

Saw about 500 tons of snow and a lot of rocks/stones and pebbles, and some people coming out of their tents.
I saw a couple of people ( I saw 4 climbers)
I saw a base camp. And to give me a challenge I counted all the tents! ( over 100! )
In my opinion, I thought this was a great idea to have this homework and i had a lot of fun doing it! This gave me a idea to actually climb Mt. Everest. This is a great picture of Mt. Everest. I think my step-dad can take this shot. :)

When I first looked at this picture of Mount Everest I thought that Mount Everest was a tiny boulder, then I saw caves I couldn’t believe how big it was, even the small chunks of snow next to the tents seemed like they would be as big as mountains. When I first saw it I thought Mount Everest it seemed like it was a tiny rock then I zoomed in and saw all the tents and that must have been the base camp. I saw about 15 people standing around in a circle, I think they were discussing the climb. I also saw someone had there snow pants hanging over a tent to dry.
I thought this picture was neat, I can’t believe how they got the whole entire mountain and all the details.

Happy New Year!

When I saw Mt.Everest I was amazed, I knew it was big but not that big.

Unfortuneatly I wasn't able to find the explorers or the base however I did notice what seemed like a path made of snow.

I did find the website amasing and I never knew that kind of technolagy was possible.

What I first thought when I saw the large picture of Mt. Everest was that it must be very cold there. I observed that it must be spring, since there wasn't a lot of snow. I also observed that there seemed to be steam coming from behind the top of the mountain. The only mountain climbers I saw were at the base camp. I counted 20, even though there were probably many more inside the tents. I saw the base camp and was SHOCKED at how small it was. I think the website is pretty cool and will write the name down so that I can keep visiting it.

When I first saw the picture of Mt. Everest, I was amazed. This was a mountain that many people had climbed, and succeeded. These people must have a huge sense of determination. I observed that all of the tiny houses and people looked like ants compared to what looked like a giant foot path. I found 7 people, and they were near the bottom-right hand corner and the lower-left hand corner of the screen. I saw the base camp; it was near about half of the people I saw, on the right side of the screen. I thought that this website was awesome, because not many people actually get to see Mt. Everest.

When I first saw the picture I didn't think that it was Mount Everest!!! But what I noticed was that most snow was collected on the top of the smaller mountains that make up Mount Everest. But why? But the pathways also have a lot of sleet, snow, and ice.

I am utterly amazed this is the biggest mountain I have ever seen in my whole life, even the Adirondacks are tiny compared to Mount Everest! Since Mount Everest is SO high up it snowy and cold. Its snowy and its very very cold , but it's lack of atmosphere, or rather, of atmospheric pressure, that sucks the heat out of high places. At sea level, the pressure is around 14.7 pounds per square inch.At 5,000 feet it's around 12.2 pounds per square inch. While humans are comfortable at either level, that's quite a change in pressure. So it's cold and as seen in the picture it is utterly covered in snow. Sadly I didn't see any climbers on the glacier, but I my hypothesis is that they were doing it for fun, or to find scientific discoveries, I'm betting on they were scientists trying to discover. I did see the base camp and since you called it a BASE CAMP that sort -of proves they were scientists trying to discover something new. Some are big probably laboratory's to discover minerals, cures, lost species, e.t.c. I think this website is very educational, it can strength young minds to explore, and discover, what they can't leave to see, I personally love this website I learned people ( or scientists ) camp out, in Mount Everest.

The first thing I thought was "must find hikers!" I first just looked around the picture and tried to find everything I could. Then I found the glacier and tried to find the hikers and base camp but didn't until the end. When I did, I found one hiker and he was near the base camp. Altogether, I liked it but it was hard to find the hikers and the base camp.

When i first saw the picture of mt.everest i thought that it was very a intresting sight. I also thought that it would be very terifiying to climb. When i zoomed in i saw a lot of little sort of craters in the rock. I also observed that there was a lot of snow in those craters.I did not find any of the mountain climbers and i didnt see a sign of the base camp.one thought i had was that the mountain was very big. Another thought i had was that the website gave me good ideas to write down.

When I first saw the picture of Mount Everest I thought this assignment is awesome!

I observed the snow and I saw interesting snow sculptures. I saw a skeleton, a dragon and some sort of head.

I found the climbers; there were 2 of them. I saw them up the mountain, close to the base camp.
Yes I did see the camp. They mostly had yellow and blue tents. I also saw 23 people at the base camp.

My thoughts were that this assignment was the most fun one I have done in years. I also realized at you have to pay close attention to screen and the surroundings.

When I saw Mt.Everest for the first time I was amazed to see its size! I observed part of Mt.Everest. I was amazed to see how big the camp was. I wonder how they got it up there? This website rocks!!!
