4th Grade - February Vacation 2/2013 - Sandy & Our Vacation

4th Graders,
Welcome to your February Vacation assignment.

As you know we now have a shortened vacation due to the days of school we missed after Hurricane Sandy struck in October.

Your assignment for February vacation is...

...in two parts

First...
... tell me how Sandy changed your plans for this vacation.

  • Since we lost three days of February vacation did your plans change?
  • Where you supposed to go somewhere or do something that you now can't do because of the schedule change?
  • If no plans changed has your thoughts about the vacation changed since it is only 2 days? Does it feel more like a long weekend as opposed to a "vacation?"

Second...
... look at this National Geographic photo gallery about Hurricane Sandy and the after effects. Look at all the pictures and then:

  • Choose one that stands out to you the most
  • Describe the picture
  • Tell me why it made such an impression on you

Please post your answers in full & complete sentences as a comment below...

This year for winter recess we did not have any plans for a vacation. But i'm going to miss the long break. A better idea whould of been to have this week off and add 3 days to the end of the school year. The photo that stands out to me is the one that has all the yellow taxis under water. I felt bad for all the people who can't go to work.
Have a great time off!

This 2012 Christmas break i had lots of thing to do. I didn't have any plans all that week. I wanted to watch a new episode and go to sleep late. Like i said i wanted that week to sleep late at night to watch a new episode . I don't think its a very long vacation but i think its ok the way it is.

Hurricane Sandy didn't effect my plans. Mostly all of them were inside my house.Except for video games,or television. I think the 2 days were fine the way it is.On the other hand, those pictures of Hurricane Sandy, were sad to me because it destroyed peoples property, their homes, heat, and some people died too.

The February vacation shortening changed my plans a little. First, I just wanted to relax and go to sleep late, and now I have less of that. Second, I wanted to have extra time to be lazy and not worry about homework until about Thursday. Third, and last, I wanted more time to have fun. The picture that stood out the most to me was the second picture called "Deluge". It had all of the the water pouring into the train station and it probably ruined everything. It made an impression on me by showing me that first of all, not only the MTA was hit but also other transit businesses were hit like what I think in this picture is the LIRR, or PATH.

Sandy did not really affect plans. In fact, I had none! But it still made it difficult to do some things. For example, picking up my baby brother. My parents drop him of every weekday because they are very busy at work. And the gusty winds made it difficult to go to my grandmothers house, pick up my brother, and bring him back. Losing 3 days of February brake does not do anything because I don't have anything planned. And as I just said I was not going to go anywhere. Well it does not necessarily fell like a long weekend because I mean, it's only 2 days, no biggie. Plus it's fair we lose some days of learning, we need to make up for it.

The picture I chose was the one with the medics in the red room. It looked very tragic and it told me that lots suffered badly. The medics were treating someone affected by Sandy. It looked like they were putting the man/woman in the truck in a hurry to get the patient safe and better faster. It made an impression on me because it showed me the beast in Sandy.

Part 1:
Yes my plans changed for my February vacation.

Because of Hurricane Sandy, my vacation changed because I was supposed to go to Connecticut for 1 week to visit my Uncle, Aunt and cousins. Instead of that I have to stay at home and I am not very happy about that.

Part 2:
The picture that stood out the most to me was Fire, Water...

The things I saw in the picture were burned, flooded, broken houses and flooded roads.

The picture made me feel sorry for the people that lost their homes and their belongings.

Anonymous said...

What I did for the breake was I had to stay in the house while the rain was poring. The lights did not go off but they did flicker so we turned them off to save electricity. Then we watched a really scary movie but it was a good movie. We would get signs on our tv saying that we should not step one foot out the house because it was really dangerous. So we just stayed in the house. So that is my break when sandy happened. ----madelene Grullon

Hurricane Sandy effected my vacation because I was going to be with my mom for nine days and we had a lot of things planned, so instead I visit my mom for five days. I'm still having a lot of fun with my mom, but I wish I had more. It feels like a short vacation.

I noticed how dangerous a Hurricne can be just by looking at these pictures of neighborhood by the water. The water flooded streets, train stations, people homes and left families without power.

T. Cherian said...

I didn't have any plans, so no plans were ruined. My family went to India over Christmas break; we didn't want to travel anywhere else, so this didn't affect me. My "vacation" is more like a long weekend, because vacations are longer than 4 days for me.

The picture "Fire, Water..." was the most appealing to me. The picture is of a fire and a flood. This event occurred on the tip of the Rockaway Peninsula. A huge fire burned the town. A mass flood appeared and swamped the town with 4 feet of water. The picture looks like the zombie apocalypse happened during a tornado-twister, right in the middle of nuclear missile testing site. A couple of trees fell down, and trash is everywhere. It appealed to me because it looked like something from a horror movie. On the other hand, this wrecked people's houses, cars, and maybe even injured or killed people. Fortunately, we can better prevent these kind of events now.

Lauren.B said...

Hurricane Sandy did not ruin any plans for me but now it does not feel like a vacation anymore. We only have 2 days off and a vacation is more like a week off. Also I was looking forward to stay up really late and wake up late for a week, but now I can't. I'm just glad they did not take anything away form our summer break!

The picture "Fire,Water" caught my eye the most. The picture showed homes in Breexy Point, Queens that were demolished by Hurricane Sandy. Now those people may have no money, shelter, or food. Though, people are working together to recontruct the homes that were destroyed.

Hurricane Sandy changed a lot of my plans during October through November and even longer. The first way it changed all of my plans, was when I was supposed to play the second half of my the season’s soccer games but they were all cancelled because all the fields in New Jersey, Manhattan and Staten Island were all destroyed so the games were cancelled and we were never able to make them up.

The second way it affected me was because school was closed that week, I now only have two days off of school instead of five days for winter break and it feels only like a long weekend. Then on top, of that I have a lot of homework.

When I was looking for pictures that caught my eye on Schoolastic News, I saw the weirdest picture. There must have been over 150 taxi cabs floating in 3-4 ft. of water. Another weird picture was when I saw gallons of water poring down the stairs of the highway or a city street. I made me think of ways that we could prevent all of this from happening and I feel bad for people that lost family members or their houses or more in Hurricane Sandy.

Sandy changed my plans a little. I was going to go skiing Monday - Wednesday, but now I'm coming home early and skiing Monday and Tuesday.
Part Two
I chose Santiago destroyed. it has garbage all over the streets houses nearly destroyed and looks like a disaster zone! This made a inpact to me because it really shows how much sandy hurt people towns and villages.

Kai S. said...

No, my plans did not change. No, I was not supposed to go anywhere. I think it feels more like a long weekend, because usually vacation is a whole week or more.
the picture that stood out to me the most is the picture titled
"Delunge". In it, water pours from an elevator into a subway station. this picture stood out to me because it shows how much damage a hurricane can do.

Even though we lost 3 days of our vacation my plans about this vacation have not changed. I am still going to Washington D. C. even with the schedule change. My thoughts about the vacation have changed. I now think of this vacation as a long weekend.
the picture that stood out to me the most was a picture titled "Precious Cargo." It featured doctors and nurses loading patients onto ambulances. This picture stood out to me because it bothered me that a natural disaster like this one could put medical patient's lives in danger like that.

No my plans didn't change for this week. I was not going anywhere for this vacation. It's not feeling like a weekend because we only have 4 days of no school.

Out of the National Geographic photo gallery, I chose fire and water. I chose it because It shows what hurricane Sandy did to some houses. It made such an impression on me because hurricane Sandy did a lot of damage to houses.

Sandy did not change my plans. Actually I didn't have any plans. I didn't like that we only get 2 more days than 5 more days because if we had 5 days more we could go out of the state and not be absent.

I like the second picture because the water is going through the doors of the factory. And its flooding the factory.

Jake B said...

No my plans did not change. I got to play basketball and baseball. I got to go to Conneticut to see my Grandpa and Grandma and my two aunts. We are going to go skiing in Massachuts for two days with my family.

I picked the deluge picture when the water is flying into the train station. I picked this picture because it's a place where people actually use every day. Water isn't suppose to be in there. Sandy effected lots of people in alot of ways and this picture shows one of them.

My family didn’t have any plans for vacation. But we did have a lot of fun.

In Chinatown, We had a fun at a festival with Chinese dragons, pigs, tigers, etc.
My mom bought some sort of cannon that blasted confetti out the end. It also blasted a parachute guy that landed on my eye when I looked at the confetti flying every where.

After that, I went to my father’s house. My friend Leela and her mother Aviva came to go to this “wake” party. My friend Katia had a dog named Savi. Savi died. But they didn’t actually put Savi on display. But the party was pretty fun because I was dancing to these games called Just Dance 4, Just Dance 2, and Just Dance Michael Jackson. Then we listened to this song that a guy made for Savi.

The picture that mostly stood out to me was the Island underwater. This picture is an Island in Cuba that got flooded from, of course, Hurricane Sandy. It seems like if you walk out of your house, water will come into your house. And if you step out of your house, well, I don’t need to explain that. But if your lucky, the outside of your house wouldn’t be flooded. And I can see a lucky guy walking out of his house.

Sandy did not change any plans for vacation because I didn't have any.Though I think I will miss the three extra days. This year February break seems more like a really long weekend not a break/ vacation.
The picture i chose was called Deluge. Deluge showed water pouring out of a elevator. I chose this picture because it shows that a hurricane can do lots of damage to places you might think safe like a elevator for example.

I didn't really have plans for the vacation. It is not really a vacation it is just a long weekend.

I chose the picture that was called troubled water. It was a picture of water near a bridge going on the street. It looked like the ocean continued on the street. That is why I chose that picture.

nyklos wilson said...

My plans didn't change because my family wasn't going anywhere. My thoughts about the vacation is that it isn't really a vacation it is more of a long weekend. The picture that stands out the most is the 3rd picture with all the destruction. It stands out to me because it's so devastating.

Jack S. said...

Because of Hurricane Sandy we have less vacation days. If we had the regular amount of vacation I would have gone to camp or go to museums and other places with my mom. Since, the vacation is only 2 days, plus the weekend, it feels like a long weekend not a vacation.

The picture titled “Santiago Destroyed” stood out to me the most. The picture has buildings that are torn apart, plants and bricks and broken wagons and things like that. Also there are people walking around the torn up street. It made such an impression on me because it makes me feel bad for the people who live there. I can’t imagine what it would feel like to experience what they have experienced.

I really did not have any plans for this vacation, but I feel sad because we lost three days off our vacation. This vacation was supposed to be a fun long vacation. I think that they did not have to shorten our vacation. The photo I chose is called And Snow. It has an ambulance stuck in the snow and theirs a man in the snow telling him how to get out. This picture makes such an impression to me because the first thing I think of is all of those people who just got all of their things together and snow starts to fall and they lose everything.

Hurricane sandy did not effect my family's plans. We had one vacation week.

Hurricane Sandy ruined peoples life because they had no homes or food since it was all gone.I did not go anywhere over the break.Thinking about Hurricane Sandy makes me sad because people lost their homes.Houses were on fire, flooded, and they were knocked down.
From the picture 'In a Jam,' yellow cabs form New Jersey were flooded by Hurricane Sandy. The water is high which causes people to stay where they are since they can't travel.

This picture made an impression on me because I have never seen anything like this and it makes me worry about the people who undergo through this experience.

Fire, Water... is a photograph of Breezy Point, Queens after a huge fire. It stood out to me the most because it helped me understand how hard the storm hit and how thankful we should be for our food and shelter.

I had no plans for the vacation. I'd rather have 5 days of vacation than 2 days, but I still had fun.

The picture that really stood out to me was Precious Cargo. The picture shows 6 nurses trying to help a baby evacuate the hospital. There was a machine with wires hooked up to the baby. It was sad having to evacuate VERY sick patients. I think the nurses, police, and firemen were very brave.

Part 1
My vacation plans changed. I was supposed to go to the Bronx, but because of the shorten vacation, I stayed at home.

Part 2
Lower Manhattan Laid Low is the picture that stands out to me the most. There is a lot of water on the steps to the Plaza Shops. You cannot see the bottom of the steps, because the water is so deep.
This picture impresses me, because the water is sitting still and nothing looks damaged.

Sandy did not really change my vacation plans since we already planed our flight to Colon, Panama. I planned to go there however if I didn’t go we would lose money because we wouldn’t get a refund. It feels more like a long vacation because when your on a cruise every day seems much longer then a regular day in New York.

I picked the “Fire, Water” photo showing the burn’t homes. It shows how everyone lost all of their memories and stuff. All of the water seems like the pipes broke causing all the water. However it is just from the hurricane aftermath. This shows me that I should be grateful that my home wasn’t affected as much as these homes in Rockaway.

Some things that I remember from the Hurricane was all of the wind, heavy rain and the news reporters talking about how bad the storm will be. Before the storm I was worried that our home was going to be destroyed. After the storm I was happy that our home was okay, that my family was safe and that I will be able to see all of my friends at school again.

My plans didn't change. Though I couldn't go to camp on wednsday, thursday, and friday. To me it just felt not even like a long weekend or a vacation. It felt like a regular weekend.

The picture I chose was in a jam. There was a bunch of yellow taxis lined up in a huge flood. I chose this picture because I've always had the fear I'm gonna get drowned and never come out. So I thought this picture would be a great reprisentative of what disaster's hurricane Sandy created.

The picture i chose was Beach Before Landfall because the beaches got flooded, sand was in the streets, houses got flooded.People lost there lives, homes and power.I Feel sad for the people who got affected in hurricane sandy, because they lost there property and some people lost there love ones.

Hurricane Sandy changed my February break plans a lot. I was supposed to go to California, but we didn’t have time because of the shortened break. I do not even consider this break as a vacation, only a lengthened weekend.
The photograph I chose is a picture of Manhattan’s Plaza shops flooded severely. It reminds me of a place near my dad’s office. I can’t imagine how so much floodwater got into Lower Manhattan.

Hurricane Sandy did not change my plan's because i'm taking the 2 day's that we lost off. My mom is a doctor so that was her only vacation this whole year. And she has plan her breaks for the year in the spring.

The picture that stands out to me is "Ground zero again" taken by John Minchillo. It stands out to me because if you see ground zero on a map it is not that close to the coast but the seawater is pouring down in streams!

Hurricane Sandy did not affect my "vacation". Instead, all that changed was that it would have felt like a vacation, but all it feels like is a long weekend. I had no plans for this break at all. All that was planned was to stick around at home and play/do homework. Everything that I might have done would be something similar of what I did, and I was not planned to go anywhere besides NYC for this break. Again all it felt like to me was a peaceful, long weekend.

The open house stands out to me because the house front just fell off. It probably frightened the neighbors, and especially the people who live there. The house next to it had tape in the windows. That might have been because they saw the house so they taped their windows. It's weird that they still had light on though.

Hurricane Sandy did not really change plans for my family. We were going to stay here in Brooklyn anyway. To me it did feel like a long weekend, not a vacation. Maybe it's because we stayed here. I don't know.
The picture on that National Geographic website that stood out to me most was "Fire, Water..." . It stood out to me because it showed me some real and horrible destruction done and why the hurricane was so different, why it was so bad. There is stuff all over the place, trees bent, houses destroyed and water everywhere; everything seems to be wet. And this scene isn't very far away. It's scary.

Sandy didn't really affect an of my plans not because I had none, but because we were going skiing for the first time, and we weren't going to miss that! I still think of sandy as a vacation only because my family chose to stay in Utah the three extra school days.

The picture that stands out the most the me is "In A Jam" because that even though there is no one in every 52 taxis in the picture it must be very hard for people in work or school to look good after taking one of those taxis! That picture also stands out because of how many cars in that picture must have gone out of energy.

Hurricane Sandy didn't affect my "long vacation" because my family found out about the long vacation before we had booked anything, so we had a 4 day vacation without any problem. The only thing is that my birthday was the Wednesday we came back, which really stunk.
For me, KINGSTON FIRE was the one that caught my eye. With the smoke rising up in the side of the picture, and what I thought was cool was how the red lights shone in the darkness. The picture stood out to me because of beautiful but intimidating it looked.

The reason it makes an impression on me is because it looks very dangerous but beautiful at that same time.

I did not get effected by super storm Sandy. I was in a very safe spot. I was behind the armory. I had no plans to go anywhere during Sandy. I though it really messed up our school time. The thing I did not like about Sandy is that I could not go outside or go to the armory.

My family almost forgot about the shortened break, and w ere almost late for school on Wednsday (when we got back to school)! I felt so embarrassed when I walked into my morning school classroom, and everyone was already doing the worksheets!

We were very lucky that our plans for the break did not change. We were able to take a short trip to Puerto Rico and we managed to jam everything we wanted to do into that vacation. We went to the bio-luminescent bay, we swam in Sea Beach, and played in a pool at my Dad's friend's house. We were very fortunate.

The picture of Breezy Point, Queens stood out the most to me. It stood out to me because it looked so devastated and no firefighter could even help to calm down the fires! They must have felt so helpless. It made me realize how lucky I am that our home on the NJ Shore was still standing.

My plans for the break did not change. I thimk it should not be called February Break, it should be called a double weekend.

My February vacation plans didn’t change much, my family wasn’t planning on going anywhere, but we were looking forward to more adventures into the city. It kind of made it feel like a long weekend instead which was a bummer! It ended up being pretty cool cause I got to go to New Jersey and stay overnight with my friend Oscar who used to go to school at PS 10 but moved over the summer.

The picture I chose was of the subway station being flooded with water shooting out of the elevator. I thought this picture was pretty cool because you could see how strong the water was and how scary it would have been to be down in the subway station. I wonder if someone was standing there or if it was taken from a video camera.

Hurricane Sandy did not change any plans for the Febuary vacation.
I just hung out with my family and relaxed.

the photo that really stood out to mee was Calm After The Storm. It really stood out to me because at first the telaphone pole looked like a helicopter. but when i looked at the picture i was disapointed to see that it was a telephone pole
