5th Grade - February Vacation 2/2013 - Sandy & Our Vacation

5th Graders,
Welcome to your February Vacation assignment.

As you know we now have a shortened vacation due to the days of school we missed after Hurricane Sandy struck in October.

Your assignment for February vacation is...

...in three parts

First...
... tell me how Sandy changed your plans for this vacation.

  • Since we lost three days of February vacation did your plans change?
  • Where you supposed to go somewhere or do something that you now can't do because of the schedule change?
  • If no plans changed has your thoughts about the vacation changed since it is only 2 days? Does it feel more like a long weekend as opposed to a "vacation?"

Second...
... look at this National Geographic photo gallery about Hurricane Sandy and the after effects. Look at all the pictures and then:

  • Choose one that stands out to you the most
  • Describe the picture
  • Tell me why it made such an impression on you

Third...
... what do you remember about Hurricane Sandy

  • from the time leading up to the storm
  • from the time during the storm
  • from the days after the story

Please post your answers in full & complete sentences as a comment below...

Sandy did not change my plans, Sandy just shortened it. I am still going to my grandparents house just not for as long as it would have been. I got as much homework as I would have gotten for a 10 day vacation. And, yes I feel it is just a long weekend, not a vacation.
The picture I chose has a heap of water gushing through the door. The picture made an impression on me because it shows how much damage some people had from hurricane Sandy.
I remembered that everyone by the water was panicking and was planing to leave that night. I went to Ossining to spend the hurricane with my friend and her grandparents. Turns out, Ossining had a worse time than Brooklyn. During the night of hurricane Sandy we lost power and had to use flashlights. We also had no running water so after the storm my friend & I had to bring in water and fire wood to help her grandparents.

Even though I am a bit sad that my vacation was cut short I should not be complaining about it, it should be the people who were effected by the hurricane. The vacation feels like a long weekend, I am just happy that I can get a few days from school.
I saw a picture of the Empire State Building next to the hurricane. I thought the hurricane was not that big but when I saw that picture my view on the subject.
I remember all the rain. I was trying not to fall and get washed away. I mostly stayed inside due to the rain, so I just watched T.V. I was a little bummed out that we had to go back to school but also happy that I got to continue my education.

No my plans have not changed. My plans have not changed because I wasn't really planning to go anywhere. I picked the Ground Zero again. Ground Zero Again, looks like a waterfall and of course Ground Zero. It made such an impression on me because when I looked at the picture it actually did look like the Ground Zero waterfall.
When I heard there was a hurricane coming I was really scared. During the storm I was freaking out. Almost the whole time I was holding a flash light in my hand just in case the power shut off. After the storm I was happy and relieved. I was happy because nobody in my family was hurt or houses were damaged. I hope hurricane Sandy does not happen again!

My plans were not changed at all. I just technicly had to have some of them move to different dates. It does feel like a long weekend, though.

I thought the picture of the tidal wave being pushed by the wind really took on what happened during the flooding. It looked like a tidal wave.

I remember when I watched all of the wrecked houses on the news. I also remember rain everywhere. Work was cancelled too much. =D

My plans were not changed at all. My plans was not changed because I really wasn't going anywhere. The picture I chose had a huge wave coming. The picture made an impression on me because it showed how much people got hurt. I also remembered how a lot of people were being crazy. I wanted to stay at my cousins house but it was really bad at my block so i couldn't go. We didn't go out of power or water. I hope hurricane sandy dosent happen again!

My plans were not changed at all. My family does not go away in the winter, because we go away in the summer.

My favorite picture is of this lady staring at all of her demolished property early in the morning. It made an impression on me because that picture reminded me of all the people who became homeless because of Hurricane Sandy.

When my Mom and Dad first found out that a hurricane was coming our way, they declared that the whole family was going to sleep down in our basement. We have a tree right outside our house, and it might fall on any one of our bedroomsrooms.

Our house is at one of the highest parts in Brooklyn, and our house was not going to be flooded.

Later that night, I heard a fierce bang right outside my house. In the morning, we found out that the tree next to our house had fallen, but in the opposite direction of our house.

That morning, my Dad and I cleaned up the tree that had fallen, and went around the block helping other people with their fallen trees. :]

My plans were not changed at all.I wasn't really going anywhere and wasn't planing going anywhere special either. The picture I choosed had a really big wave almost like the tsunami.the picture made an impression on me because it showed me how a lot of people got injured or maybe died. Also it showed me on how all houses were totally crushed.on hurricane sandy I really wanted to see my grandma but because of the horrible weather I couldn't go.I really hope there is not another superstorm like hurricane sandy.

My plans weren't changed at all from Hurricane/ Superstorm Sandy. I didn't need to go anywhere. My schedule is the same. But it isn't fair that every year we need 180 days. It wasn't our fault. We deserve a full week off!
My favorite picture from the gallery is "Calm After the Storm". It really shows how much damage Sandy did. It really stood out. Luckily in my area there wasn't much damage.
What I remember about Sandy was seeing all the wind. There is a tree in front of my house and I thought it was going to fall! But it didn't. But on Halloween I saw so many trees down. It was creepy. Especially on a night like that! During the storm I was outside and then we felt extreme winds and quickly went back to our house. After Sandy I saw major damage. My usual store (Fairway) is in Red Hook, Brooklyn and it had to close. It will reopen though on March 1, 2013.

My plans weren't changed at all its my usual weekend either go out stay home or go to my friends house.i think we shouldn't have just 2 days off extra!!!!My cousins go to St. Joseph the Worker Cathlic Acadamy and when Hurricane Sandy came we were off of school the same amount. And yesterday the 15 th of February they left to Florida because they both had 1 whole week off.

my farvoite picture was calm after the storm I liked it so munch because it showed all the damage hurricane sandy did.
stuff I remeber about hurricane sandy was during halloween all the tree's down also all the stores closed and everyone hiding in there house.

This year I didn’t have any spring break plans, so Hurricane Sandy did not affect my vacation. I feel strange because this was supposed to be a vacation, but now it feels like a very long weekend.

The photo that stood out to me was the one with the building that was cut in half because of Hurricane Sandy. It made such an impression on me because you can see that the hurricane ripped out bricks, and pulled out the electrical cords. I feel bad for the people who lost their homes.

I remember how my parents bought lots of food and water, checked if all the flashlights were working, and set out candles in each room. We all worked together to make sure we were ready.

Later I was sick of all the rain, and I couldn’t wait until it was over. That night I couldn’t sleep, I was nervous that something would happen to us. Luckily we were fine.

My plans did not change from hurricane Sandy. A lot of other peoples plans changed like if they were going somewhere for the February break. The picture that really stood out for me was the building that was split in half. All of the wires and bricks were gone. One thing I can remember from hurricane Sandy was when a tree fell down in my backyard and the roots were ripped out it was scary because it almost hit my house. That is how peoples plans changed and how hurricane Sandy was for me.

Hurricane Sandy changed my plans because I was supposed to go to Coney Island. If I would have never watched the news I would have never knew there was a storm coming.

The photo that stood out to me was Calm After The Storm. It was crazy how Sandy cut the power lines down and just really ruined the house.

What I remember about the storm is that my dad went out to go get a bottle of seltzer, and a piece of foam from an abandoned building hit him on his leg.He was fine but he was scared when it hit him.

Ismael Martinez said...

I want to write about sandy because people lost their homes because they got flooded in their houses so they got no where to sleep but if we help them to find a home for them. Then now they could have a home for them to sleep and they could get food from other people for food in the street and they could get jobs to get money for house.

My plans were not changed at all.I wasn't really going anywhere and wasn't planing going anywhere special either. My favorite picture from the gallery is "Calm After the Storm". On the woman's face I thought she was looking at the damage Sandy made. It makes me feel like I would want to help her by putting a smile on her face by making her laugh. It really shows how much damage Sandy did. It really stood out. In the park nearby my house trees fell but no houses were flooded because I don't live near water. When home while Hurricane Sandy hit, i watched the news channel because i wanted to see if I had school the following day. I understood that even though P.S.10 did not get hit hard it would not be fair for the other schools if only we could return to school.

Hurricane sandy did not hurt or effect me at all but for other people it did a lot of damage i also know that hurricane sandy destroyed the cony island cyclone.

every February break me and my family go on a trip to a place out of NY last year we went to mexico this year we almost went to Jamaica. But sandy ruined it. Instead i'm in new jersey.yes it is not a vacation its just a weekend with two days extra.
I remember the time leading up to sandy, I was disappointed to find out my dads birthday was on a monday. When the news said that school was cancelled i was happy that I was able to spend my dad's birthday with my dad.
eventually it got really boring just sitting home unable to just go outside and play sports. I couldn't even go to play basketball at the armory because every body was living there until they got back on their feet.
After the storm I felt horrible for all the people who's homes were wiped out. I donated all the clothes I grew out of. And bought boatloads of food for all the people in need.

Hurricane Sandy changed my family's plans for this "break". We were going to go skiing in Oregon at a really nice lodge called Timberline that has a huge fireplace, a rooftop heated pool, and cool ski slopes. But then the hurricane hit. It DEFINATELY does not seem like a so called "vacation". Bleh.
The two pictures that stood out to me most were "...and snow" and "Troubled Water". "...and snow" was of an ambulance in about three feet of snow. It stood out to me because I didn't know there was snow in Hurricane Sandy. "Troubled Water" was of the Manhattan Bridge over lots of flooding waters.
I remember from Hurricane Sandy when I was looking out my window watching a tree dance like a crazy person.

Hurricane Sandy was a tropical cyclone. Its damage nearly cost $75,000,000,000. It was also known as Super Storm Sandy. It developed from a Tropical Wave to Tropical Storm Sandy. On October 25, 2012, it hit Cuba. 2 days later it weakened.
We were supposed to get 9 days off, but the Department of Education said that we had to many days off because of Hurricane Sandy. Instead we only have 4 days off. My plans did change due to the 5 days lost. I was supposed to go to my Aunt Debbie's house for the whole week, but now I have less time to spend with her. At least, I could still go to her house tomorrow.
I chose the photo Calm After the Storm. In the picture, there was a woman with her white raincoat. She was looking at the destruction that surrounded her. There were electric cables and wires that fell down. The grass was everywhere. It made such an impression on me because it looked like a very sad picture. She looked helpless.
I remembered that I felt scared and excited at the same time at the beginning of the storm. I felt scared because I could have died. I felt excited because I knew that there was going to be no school due to the dangerous storm. I remembered that I was relaxing during the storm. I felt like I was on vacation, but I still had to do my science project on the days that we had off. After the storm, I felt disappointed because I had to go back to school.

Gabby P said...

Hurricane Sandy did mess up my plans. Friday,is my birthday so I was supposed to just relax but now I can not. I was also suppose to go upstate to spend time with my family on that day. I can't do any of my plans on Saturday because I have a middle school test. As you see Hurricane Sandy really messed up my plans.
The photo I chose was Calm After The Storm. If I was to describe the picture I would say it has a women in it. She is standing in front of a pile of rumble which is her house. But the picture is more than that. It is a women starting a new beginning to her life. She is now looking at what she is going to leave behind. This picture made such an impression on me because of the women. It takes a a lot of courage to do what she is doing. Some of us do not even have that kind of courage. I would not have the courage to look at my house and say it has been destroyed but I am moving on. That is why this photo made such an impression on me.
Leading up to the storm I was kind of frightened because the way people were describing the way the storm would play out. I remember relaxing telling ghost stories. We also played some board games and spend time with each other. I remembered how scared my dad was! After the storm I was very thankful that no one had gotten hurt by the storm in my family. But I was very sad to heard what happened in other places. I was also kind of disappointed we had to go back to school.

Well in my February i was going to my cousins house but then that's when i heard news about Sandy and i couldn't go no more and that was bad for me so i had to spend all of those good 24 hours doing nothing at all.In the picture that i picked was a woman standing seeing her house or someone else's but even though i could see that deep down inside her she was shocked and very sad looking at all that wood on the floor i think that she didn't even want to see it but she was taking down her feelings. That picture also made me think well if i was that woman i will be doing the same thing right now. From the hurricane sandy this is all i can remember well that they said it was gonna be bad and there was gonna be a flood or even worse and that it was gonna be a huge weather that no matter what we stay in our houses.

Emma H. said...

Hurricane Sandy didn't really shorten my vacation at all. It pretty much stayed the same because I wasn't going to spend the whole week at my grandma's house.

The photo that was the most shocking to me from Sandy was the one with the Brooklyn Bridge showing the streets below completely underwater. It made me think that I was really lucky because there was hardly any destruction in my neighborhood.

I remember from the storm that there was a lot of winds blowing and huge branches completely blown off the trees and scattered on the ground. There was this one tree a few blocks down that was completely fallen over and spread out over the sidewalk.

Hurricane Sandy ruined a lot of my family's property and enjoyment time. My grandmother and grandpa were worried a lot. They couldn't get to their friend's house and they AMBULANCE couldn't come because everything was flooded. When I heard those pictures of Hurricane Sandy's damage, I felt very upset for those people that got harmed because of Sandy.

Mckenzie R said...

Hurricane Sandy did not change any of my plans because I did not have any. I don't think my mom or my dad had somewhere planned to take me. Well, actually I didn't know it was supposed to be a holiday. But, since I had four awesime days off, it felt like a holiday.
The picture that stood out for me was "Ground Zero, Again." I chose that picture because it shows me how much damage water can do. It truly looks like a war zone. Also, when I read about the picture it surprised me at how tall the water was. It was nearly 14 feet tall. It made an impression on me because it surprised me because I never thought that water was able to break metal.
I don't remember that many things since Hurricane Sandy hit. Let me just tell you some things I do remember. For instance, from the time leading up to the storm everybody was saying that the Hurricane was not going to be that bad. Also, earlier on the day of the storm, my mom wanted my step dad to buy some type of food item that I cannot seem to remember. My step dad came back two minutes later because he said that the lines were too long. So, my mom told him to not bother getting it. During the storm, I was scared from my head to my toes. My mom called me from doing my homework to look at a tree that the wind had just cracked in half. Up to this day, the tree is still there. The people that said it wasn't going to be so bad was wrong. It was really bad. After the storm hit there were really sad sights to see. Alot of people's lives were gone. Also, houses were flooded. Even cars were damaged. I pray that those people are able to get their lives back together soon.

My plans changed since we lost three days of February vacation. I was going to go to Florida but since our vacation is shorter we can’t go. I was going to visit my mom’s friend and her kids and I was going to go to Disney world.I choose the picture “Ground Zero, Again”. This picture looks like a bunch of huge waterfalls. There is water everywhere. The water looks really dirty and I don’t suggest drinking it even if you’re desperate. I saw broken up stairs. It looked like a river with waterfalls in it. It made me feel really bad about the people living next to ground zero. I have a feeling that we are not going back there for a while. I really hope hurricane sandy didn’t destroy everything. Everything in the picture looks destroyed. I hope no one got hurt. I thought sandy was a big storm but I didn’t know it was that big. Before hurricane sandy we went to the store and got stuff like batteries, water and flash lights. During hurricane sandy we watched the news for updates on hurricane sand. I was really scared that we were going to lose power but we didn’t. After the storm we took a walk down to the gowanus canal, there were a lot of broken down trees and flooded houses. I volunteered at a church shortly after the storm. I made care packages and sandwiches for people who lost their houses. It was fun volunteering because I love helping people. I feel really bad for the people who lost their homes.

Hurricane sandy did not effect any of my February vacations because I was not planning to go any place well at least I think I didn't .But I am still a little sad that we now only have a 2 day vacation not including the weekend.

The most standing out picture I think was the one called calm after the storm.I shows a lady in a white jacket looking at all the cables, wires and buildings on the ground which was effected by hurricane Sandy. That picture stood out the most to me because first it awesome pic.second that was probobly her home so I feel bad for her.

One thing I remember about hurricane Sandy is that it flooded my dad's car and house. So he had to buy a new house and car.Another thing I remember is that hurricane Sandy poped out my window in my room.

My plans did not change since we lost three days for the break.I was just going to my grandma's house like I always do. The picture I choose was clam after storm.Even though the women had her back turned to the camera you could see that she was so devastated.A thing I remember about hurricane sandy was being stuck at home and wondering if we would lose power.I also remember sitting with my grandma and making up the song we will be stuck here till Christmas.

Jonathan A. said...

My plans did change because I was supposed to see my friend in Westchester and catch up on sleep. Hurricane Sandy was not a vacation because we were stuck inside our homes. Also, we should have had a real vacation because two days off isn't enough too see our friends and rest.

The picture that stands out the most to me is Precious Cargo. The picture shows doctors and nurses loading the person in to the ambulance. It shows how hard the nurses and doctors worked during Hurricane Sandy.

I remember that I was very scared before the storm, I thought my neighborhood would be flooded. I was very scared when the hurricane hit. The booms of lighting frightened me. After Hurricane Sandy people started donating to help the homeless and who were affected by the hurricane. Like 12/12/12, all the money was donated to the those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

It did not change my plans because I was only going skiing for 2 days.I was sad but at least we got some days off from school. The picture that stood out the most to me was precios cargo. It showed the people who got hurt during Sandy. It made such an impression because so many people's houses got knocked down. I also remember that people got injured and almost died. From the days before the people had bottles and bathtubs full of water. They would drink it and usd it to flush the toilet. People also had flashlights in case the light went out. I was watching the news and during the storm I heard rain. After the storm I saw fallen trees.

The 3 days at school didn't change anything for me. I had nothing planed on the schedule change, because I wasn't going anywhere on a trip. Yes to me it feels more like a long weekend because we only had 4 days off instead of 9.

The picture stands up to me the most is the picture with the houses that are burned and totally destroyed. It made an impression on me because it showed how much damaged Sandy caused.

I remember before the storm all the warnings and signals that were showed on tv. I also remember during the storm that it was raining hard, there was a lot of water and a lot of very strong wind. After the storm I remember the news telling everyone about all the damaged that happened because of the storm. Bye!

To be honest, as far as I'm concerned Sandy did absolutely positively nothing whatsoever to my plans. if yes, then I hardly noticed it at all. Nick (bless his brotherly wits) was my part-time scribe for one day. (No complaints there) I sadly couldn't ski because of my useless broken arm.

When I saw the images I was gaping in both amazement and horror. I felt terrible for the ones in that state of loss.

I remember crying, and my pet hamster dying, and worrying if I'd die as well as my pet had, and sleeping in my parents' bed but most of all, the fear.

Marc B said...

My plans did not change. I skipped the three days of school. Actually I had permission from my teacher because my family's plans were made in advance.

The photo that stood out the most was "Deluge". It was a New Jersey subway station flooding with water. It was really scary.

I don't remember anything leading up to the storm. During the storm I watched tv and went to my friend's house. It was windy outside. After the storm my aunt stayed with us because she had no power in her apartment and she had a little baby. I also watched more tv.

Hurricane Sandy did not change any of my plans for the vacation.I actually found out that we where going away until Tuesday after the vacation was shortened. This actually kind of did feel like a vacation even though it was only four days because I went on an air plane, stayed in a hotel in Arizona, visited my grandparents, and went swimming.
The picture that really stood out to me to me was the picture of the flood near the bridge. It stood out to me because I never was in a flood because I live very high from the water. It is amazing to see water on the sidewalk.
I did not know anything about the storm until the day before the storm hit.During the storm, we usually stayed indoors and the storm did not really hit that bad near my house. After the storm, I felt really sad for the people who got hit badly in the storm.I tried to help as much as I could by going to places where they where giving people things that they had lost.

Hurricane Sandy changed my plans alot because i was supposed to go out of the city with most of my family but since hurricane Sandy shorted our break i couldn't miss the three days of school so i couldn't go.
Picture number 3 stood out to me the most to me.The picture has a neighborhood with burned, destroyed, and crush houses and fences.the picture made such an impression on me because it could have happened in Brooklyn or LI and it didn't so that's why everyone should thank who every they believe in for their health and life.
The day of Hurricane Sandy i was making breakfast and starting to get candles just in case we lost power .after i went to take a shower and we probably wouldn't have hot water. When we lost power i was upstairs in my cousins room because all the other rooms had tree branches around it and we were watching TV and it shut right in front of our faces. After my aunt and my mom went to the basement to get more candles and i went to the basement too because i was scared. After my mom and my aunt got the candles we all (uncle, aunt, little cousin, big cousin, mom) sat at the kitchen table talking.Day 2of my Hurricane sandy:the neighbors gave us a extension cord so we can plug in our refrigerator and plug in a light. In the morning my mom and i went to go to cvs to get things to drink and to see what happened yesterday.the night of day 2 me my my mom my 2 cousins go to the basement to watch the Jefferson on the video player .Day 3:we all went to the front lawn to clean up.Day 4:Halloween in the morning we go to 5 corners to get candy for the trickier tr-eaters .STILL NOOOO POWER.we went to the airport also.watch hunger games with my big cousin. Day 5:my cousin and i kept trying to see if the light would turn on.....GUESS WHAT it turned on.my family and i were jumping up and down and screaming cause we got our power back.

When hurricane sandy struck my family didn't have plans that exact week.Hurricane Sandy took our.power out and we got it back on election day.I was so happy we got our power.back.I was jumping up and down in joy.Of course the part where we lost our power stood most for me because every night it was really dark. But what also stood out for me was when the wires on our street fell from all the wind and rain. That was really scary to see happen. The days during the storm was dark but happy. We all still could heat up things and eat and food was all we needed.

First, Hurricane Sandy did not change my plans.
This vacation felt as if it was a long weekend.
Second, the picture that stood out the most to me was "Ground Zero, Again".
As I look at the picture and read the article, I was able to understand the amount of damage that the area sustained.
To see the way the seawater, (from Hurricane Sandy), flooded the construction site, was impressive to me.
Third, what I remembered from the time leading up to the storm would be that the reporters were saying that it was going to be a "SERIOUS STORM", and for us to stay home, watch the news and be safe.
During the time of the storm, my concern was that my area could be flooded as well as other areas.
From the days after the storm, I was releaved to know that I could return to school and it seemed to be all over. I later learned that some of the staff members of my school were also affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Yes, hurricane Sandy did effect my vacation to upstate New York. But since the hurricane appeard I stayed home.
What picture stranded out was"Precious cargo". What stranded out so much was the child and the nurse in the back was holding the blood. The picture really touches me.
What I remember about the storm was really not so harsh, because because I live on a slope the water went down. So I did not suffer flooding or electricity outages.

Sandy & Me

I had no plans to go anywhere over the break but I was hopping to spend a little more time with my family. I did feel like the shortened break was more of an extended weekened than an entire “break”. The vacation was definatly not as big a thing to cheer about as it was before.

The image I picked out is a picture of the beautiful Aurora lights. It made a big impression on me because I’ve only once seen even a picture of the Aurora lights and, that, was a long time ago.

Before the storm I remember being really scared. I was talking on the phone with my mom who was working. Then I fell asleep and missed the entire thing. I felt silly in the morning, having been so frightened the night before.
During the power out after the storm, we used some from my aunt we thought we’d never have to use. A flashlight, a battery powered radio, a phone ( which probably also ran batteries), and we also used some “found” candles.
Basically, it was any old hurricane.
