3rd Grade - Thanksgiving 11/2012 - What is Thanksgiving?

What is Thanksgiving? Do you know where the holiday came from? Do you know some of the myths of thanksgiving?

For me Thanksgiving is about remembering how we got to where we are. Remembering those who came before us to help us get where we are. It is a chance to get together with family and friends and think about our history as well as look to the future. And honestly, for me, it's also a little bit about football. Eating and watching football has always been a big part of Thanksgiving in my family. We have a football tradition, every year we play the "Turkey Bowl". The Turkey Bowl is a 1 hour touch-football game where we split the family into 2 teams and play before we eat. It's all in fun, and it works up an appetite.

Your assignment:
  • What does Thanksgiving mean to you?
  • Why do you think we celebrate it?
  • How do you celebrate it?
  • What are your family's traditions?

Thanksgiving means to me when you get with your family and have a feast and talk about what you are thankful for and eat turkey! I think we celebrate it because of the day the pilgrims were celebrating a good harvest. I celebrate it by getting with my family and we eat and we talk and we give stuff to each other and really have a great time! My family's tradition is to get together and spend a nice happy day with each other. Thanksgiving is a great holiday.

Thanks giving is when we celebrate the native americans helping the pilgrims. I think we celebrate thanks giving because it gives us a time to say thanks for everything we have. A family tradition is in the morning we always watch the thanks giving parade. The night before we always watch the balloons get inflated.

What Thanksgiving means to me is it's celebrating that we are free, that we have all the the things we need (like necessities) and more. If you were one of those people who didn't have anything to thank on Thanksgiving. I think we celebrate Thanksgiving because if we didn't have thanksgiving we wouldn't realize that not every one has a home or something to be thankful for. We would think every one has the life we have an think we don't ever have to say thank you to god for what we have given and the luxurious life. The way my family celebrates thanksgiving is we sit around a table saying what we are thankful for. My families traditions on thanksgiving are going to my grandparents house on the first night and we host a feast on the second night. that is what It think is so great and important on thanksgiving

I think that Thanksgiving means getting together with my family and having a big feast. One of our traditions are switching from one side of the family to the other every other year. I think we celebrate thanksgiving because the pilgrims had a big celebration to celebrate growing good crops. My family and I celebrate Thanksgiving by saying what we are thankful for and meeting new cousins, aunts and uncles.

I think Thanksgiving means visiting family, and enjoying the wonderful gathering. I feel like Thanksgiving is celebrated as a reunion for friendship and peace. I celebrate Thanksgiving with my mom's side of the family. As a small group, we get together, give thanks for the family, and enjoy the meal. My dad cooks a splendid meal at my grandmother's house and the ladies make dessert. We usually go to my dad's mother's house the following day.

Thanksgiving to me means giving thanks for everything that we have no matter how small, we have so much to be thankful for. Americans celebrate Thanksgiving because it was the day the Pilgrims and the Native Indians came together. I celebrate Thanksgiving by spending the day with my mother. We sometimes go to the parade, but we spend a lot of time out of the house. We then come home and eat and drink lots of apple cider and watch tv. My mother is from England so we do not really celebrate it in the traditional way, but we spend a lot of time together.

To me Thanksgiving means celebrating with family, relatives, and friends. We celebrate it to honor ourselves and say what we are thankful for. I celebrated by going to my dad's oldest brother's house. The people I celebrate Thanksgiving with are my oldest uncle and his wife, their kids: Serina, Ryan, Jeffery, my second uncle, my aunt, and a lot of other people I don't know (my oldest uncle's wife's family and friends). My sister and I wait for all of the family and friends to arrive. We usually watch The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and then somebody puts on Football.

Even though I live in America,I do not really celebrate Thanksgiving. Sometimes, one of my parents, friends, invite my family to a Thanksgiving dinner. But really, all my family does for Thanksgiving, is watch football. (Mostly my dad and older brother.)This year one of my moms, friends, invited us to dinner and it was okay I guess. So mostly what Thanksgiving means to me is watching football and having dinner with my parents, friends, and making new friends.(Sometimes)

I think Thanksgiving means you get together with your family and have a feast. I also think on Thanksgiving you should be thankful for what you have because some people are very sick.I think we celebrate it because it is the holiday where we give thanks. My grandma always cooks a big turkey, but this year it was huge. My family does a tradition where we write everyones name in a hat or bag and everybody secretly chooses a name and whoevers name is on the piece of paper you have to get that person a gift for Christmas. It is called secret santa or kris kringle.

To me Thanksgiving means to be thankful that we have what we need, like a roof over our heads and food. I know there are many people without the things I have.
I think people celebrate it so they can give thanks to Pilgrims, who started lives here in America.
However, I thank Native Americans also. They were the first people here, so to me it's also sort of like a First Nation Day. I celebrate it by eating a meal. Sometimes me and my family go to a friend's home and eat there, but mostly my mom cooks the feast and we give thanks to Native Americans.

To me, Thanksgiving means to eat food with my friends and family. Thanksgiving also means to me happiness because we get to share food and pie !!!! together.

The significance of this holiday is when the farmers harvest their crops. People are thankful for farmers' crops because people can eat.

My traditions in my family are eating turkey, cranberries, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and green bean casserole (that was disgusting). Another tradition is we play a game after eating our Thanksgiving dinner. This year we played Question & Answer and Say It/Draw It/Say It. I drew a rainbow.

I think that thanksgiving is about giving thanks, spending time with family, and eating. To me, we celebrate thanksgiving because many times we do or make it through things that we should be grateful for but either we forget or we don’t have time to appreciate it. Thanksgiving is the day to remember and give thanks. For this year some people should especially thankful that they weren’t hurt in hurricane Sandy. I usually celebrate thanksgiving with my cousins, my aunts, my uncle, and my grandparents. I hope you had a fantastic thanksgiving too!

What Thanksgiving is something that happens every year. Some people do not celebrate Thanksgiving. It is only in America. There is a Turkey and it has a wish bone. Two people make a wish and pull on the wish bone and whoever gets the longer piece has their wish come true, maybe if the wish is not too big. When we sit around the table we say grace. Grace is when we say something that we are thankful for. This year I was at my 2nd house upstate. I was with my aunt and uncle and cousin. We ate turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and green beans. We had pumpkin pie and apple pie and ice cream for dessert.

Thanksgiving is a special holiday. We celebrate the feast that the Pilgrims and Indians shared together. My family starts our Thanksgiving by watching the parade on television. The whole day I get to play with my cousins. We have turkey, stuffing and potatoes, but we also celebrate our Italian heritage by having macaroni, meatballs and sausages too. The best part of the day is dessert time!

I think Thanksgiving is a holiday that everybody should be thankful for what they have. I think that because they're are a lot of people that are homeless and don't have anything to eat or drink. That means you should donate to those people all year around not just on special days and be thankful for what you have all the time.

Thanksgiving is new for me because I didn't celebrate Thanksgiving until I was seven after me and my family moved to America. There is no Thanksgiving in England.
Thanksgiving is celebrated to give thanks to all the great things in life. The 1st Thanksgiving was to give thanks that the settlers had enough food to survive.
My family and I celebrate Thanksgiving by inviting some friends over and having a big meal.
Our Thanksgiving tradition is to play a game of Apples to Apples after our feast. Apples to Apples is a really fun card game.

Thanks Giving is about pilgrims saling in the sea to the USA.Land hoe! Land hoe! They say when they see land. One by one off the ship to go on land to bild homes. Then winter comes. hundred's of people are ether sick or dead. It is sad for the pilgrims. Then North American's come and help the pilgrims. They showed them how to catch a turkey, how to plant corn, and where to pick berrys. Soon fall came. The pilgrims picked the corn and the berrys and catched a turkey. Then they celebrated Thanks Giving.
I hope enjoyed.
Thank You

I think Thanksgiving is about the 4 fs -- family, food, friends and fun. Every Thanksgiving we have a big feast with turkey, cranberry jello (with nuts), gravy, stuffing, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, rolls, and something green. Every Thanksgiving weekend we have a tradition of watching a movie trilogy such as Harry Potter or Indiana Jones. This year we watched Star Wars (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi). We also have a tradition of saying what we're thankful for at the table.

I think we celebrate Thanksgiving to remember the Pilgrims and the Native Americans and their big feast in autumn 1621. The feast represented harvest time, sharing, and turning from enemies into friends.

So the pilgrims invited the Indians to share their thanksgiving. We celebrate what they did as Thankgsgiving. At our Thanksgiving dinner we ate steak, potatos and pumpkin pie. Every family member said one thing they were thankful for. Then everyone ate dessert. When it was my turn I said I was thankful for life. To me Thanksgiving is about being thankful for important things.

To me Thanksgiving means to be grateful for all you have and think about the people that don't have as much. It is also a time to eat so much that you can't eat another bit of food. The reason why we even celebrate Thanksgiving is so we can remember how the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims. In my family we just say "DINNERS READY! Y!Y!Y!Y!Y!Y!Y!A!A!A!A!A!A!" and gobble up the turkey. I don't know what my family traditions are but everyone loves my grandmas deviled eggs and stuffed mushrooms!

Have a gobble great Thanksgiving!

At dinner we would talk about strategies for beating the video games we will play after we eat. The games we would play is Minecraft and Fortress2.

I think Thanksgiving is about giving thanks and getting together with people you love. It's eating a feast and celebrating that you are here today. What I mostly think that Thanksgiving is about is having fun and playing games and stuffing yourself silly with people you love. I invite friends over to play Minecraft, Scrabble, the Wii, the N64, and the PS2. What I mostly think that Thanksgiving is about is having fun and playing games and stuffing yourself silly with people you love.

I think Thanksgiving means to get the family together and having a feast. We celebrate Thanksgiving since the pilgrims came to the United States. They had a feast with the Indians since they were friendly. They also had that feast to celebrate how much food they can provide. We celebrate with turkey, bacon, brussels sprouts, marsh mellows, and onions. We watch the Macy's Day Parade in the morning. We watch Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving after dinner.

To me Thanksgiving means to see your relatives and get to know your family. I think we celebrate it because the Pilgrims had a big feast and you want to remember that. My family and I go to my Aunt Marge and Uncle Matt's house in Pennsylvania. We eat at five o'clock and always have pie for dessert. My family's traditions are that we always eat at five o clock and eat pie for dessert. Also we always have the family come over.

Thanksgiving is a day of thanks for the home and the food that we have. Thanksgiving day is a day we get to spend with family and friends and have a great big feast. We have turkey and corn and mashed potatoes and gravy and stuffing and biscuits. We don't really have any tradition except eat pumpkin pie.

Thanksgiving is about you saying thanks of what you have. We celebrate by spending time with our family. This year I have a lot to be thankful for. I am thankful for food, trees, saving people who lost their homes in the hurricane, and for my school. This thanksgiving we had a lot of food at my house and all of my family came over.

Thanksgiving means that you visit family and/or friends. When you're done traveling, you eat special/holiday foods. We celebrate it because we want to get together and see how each other's doing. This holiday also lets us see how family's or friend's neighborhood's foods taste.

My family (I mean my parents, my grandparents, and me) gets together and has a big dinner. My grandma says a prayer before we eat. This year, my grandparents came to my house and we had a fun time.

Thanksgiving is about giving thanks to what you love and who you love. My family tradition is that all of my family on my moms side would come and my grandmother on my dads side. This year my aunt rachel her huband and her two kids could not make it so we had a feast without them. My aunt Hether, my uncle James and my two cosins Miles and Julien came. The day they got there we went on an AMZING boat trip and saw the statue of liberty. That night i slept over and in the morning me and my aunt Hether and my cosin Miles went to see the thanksgiving parade. Even though i cold not see very well the trip was still fun. That night was the best! Me and my family ate so much great food! My favriote is the turky diped in cranberry sauce! yum! My thanksgiving was great and i hope yours was to!

I think that Thanksgiving means that all of your family gets together and enjoys what they're thankful for. We all come together and all eat turkey. I think that we celebrate because we want to have one day that all we think about is what we are thankful for and get together as a family. My grandma and grandpa come from Illinois. That is what I do for Thanksgiving.

I think that Thanksgiving means to celebrate with family and be thankful. The reason we celebrate Thanksgiving is to be thankful for good things we have. The way we celebrate Thanksgiving is go to Rochester and see my mom's family. Our family traditions are to eat a big meal with turkey and pies for dessert.

On Thanksgiving I go to Massachusetts and stay in a mansion with my relatives. I stay in a room with a lot of silent piano scrolls. This group of people has been getting together for more than 50 years. I think Thanksgiving is about remembering the pilgrims who escaped the U.K. and started our country. I am mostly exited about eating actually. And I played football too!
