3rd Grade - Thanksgiving - What is Thanksgiving?

What is Thanksgiving? Do you know where the holiday came from? Do you know some of the myths of thanksgiving?

For me Thanksgiving is about remembering how we got to where we are. Remembering those who came before us to help us get where we are. It is a chance to get together with family and friends and think about our history as well as look to the future. And honestly, for me, it's also a little bit about football. Eating and watching football has always been a big part of Thanksgiving in my family. We have a football tradition, every year we play the "Turkey Bowl". The Turkey Bowl is a 1 hour touch-football game where we split the family into 2 teams and play before we eat. It's all in fun, and it works up an appetite.

Your assignment:
  • What does Thanksgiving mean to you?
  • Why do you think we celebrate it?
  • How do you celebrate it?
  • What are your family's traditions?

To me Thanksgiving means the day when I thank all the people/things I am grateful for. I think we celebrate Thanksgiving so that we realize we should thank people/things and on Thanksgiving we get to do so. I celebrate Thanksgiving by inviting all the people I am thankful for over for dinner. My family's traditions on Thanksgiving are to cook way more food then we can eat.

Thanksgiving means to me inviting friends and family
for a feast. We celebrate because the pilgrims came and
needed help and the Native Americans helped them so they had a feast. When you celebrate it you usually have
a turkey and a couple of friends and family over for dinner. My tradition is to usually go to my friend Finn's house.

Thanksgiving means being thankful for the things I have, for my family and my friends. I think we celebrate Thanksgiving to remember to be thankful like the pilgrims were on their first Thanksgiving. I celebrate it by going to my grandmother's house. My family usually starts the day by watching the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. Then we eat a FEAST at my grandma's. I don't like turkey so my grandma makes me pasta and meatballs. I really love this dish! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

To me thanksgiving is thanking people for all their good deeds and doing what they do. I think thanksgiving is for noticing all the things you need and to notice all the simple things in life. Like waking up in the morning. My family gets together and has a party, and everyone brings food. That's my tradition. What's yours?

What Thanksgiving Means to Me

I think Thanksgiving means a time to give thanks. I also feel thankful for my friends and I. I think people celebrate Thanksgiving by sharing how they felt. And how there life is going on. Sometimes on Thanksgiving my family and I go to our grandmother's house to celebrate Thanksgiving by eating there. We eat turkey and stuffing with cranberry sauce. I think we the world celebrates it because the Pilgrims made it up, by fighting in wars with the Mohawks (who taught them how to plant) and celebrating winning battles against them. My family traditions are that we eat some turkey and other goods and we spend a lot of time celebrating Thanksgiving. To me spending the time at grandmas house is fun because I like to play games at her house. And this is what Thanksgiving means to me.

What Thanksgiving means to me is giving thanks for what we have and spending time with family. Last year we had a big feast. It was so fun. I felt like I was going to burst open because I ate so much and had so much fun. It was the greatest Thanksgiving day ever.

I think we celebrate because that is the day that the Pilgrims came to America. It is an important day because America’s third group of people had come. One of our relatives may be a Pilgrim, you never know. This Thanksgiving I had some friends over. We had food but not as much. I didn’t like any of it, but the pumpkin bread was great.

Then we went to play some soccer. Kids won but I got a jammed toenail. But it was still fun. My family has the same friends over every Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving we had them over again. I also had my friend Unni over but not at the same time.

If I had to cook for Thanksgiving I would make mac and cheese, candied yams and baked turkey:

Ingridients for turkey
1 lg onion
salt
3 cloves of garlic
2 scallions
1 sm lime
fine thyme
seasoning pepper
ginger

Combine all ingredients together in food processor. Blend until all ingredients are chopped very fine.
Season turkey with chopped seasoning inside and out, even under skin preheat oven to 375 degrees.Bake until turkey thermometer pops.Remember to keep basting turkey with its own juice so turkey will not dry.

If I had to choose someone to help me cook I would choose my mom because she is a good cook.

Thanksgiving is a time to get together and be thankful. Every year my family goes to Hamburg Buffalo to celebrate thanksgiving. We also celebrate Meissner Christmas, and my little brother's birthday. So Thanksgiving is really special for me.

I think we all celebrate thanksgiving because of the pilgrims. I don't know why it's about pilgrims, but I see pilgrims for symbols of thanksgiving. So I'm thinking it's something about pilgrims.

Thanksgiving has been getting better and better every year and I hope it will still do.

To me Thanksgiving means family and eating turkey. My sister, my cousins and I always put on a play. We make the costumes, write the script and set the scenery all by our selfs. I love eating turkey, cranberry sauce, gravy and pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving!
