3rd Grade - Spring Break - In a galaxy far, far, away...

In honor of New York City getting a space shuttle (albeit a prototype) your Spring Break assignment revolves around space and the solar system.

Go to this website:
http://www.solarsystemscope.com/

It is an interactive view of the solar system. You can click on planets to zoom in on them, you can also rotate your view around the plantes, and solar system as a whole, to get a 360 degree view. You can measure the distance between different stars and planets.

Your assignment is:
Go to the Solar System Scope website.
Click on the planets. Look at them, rotate them.

Write a response to the site as a comment here on the blog.
- Here are some questions to get you thinking about the type of response to write:
> What do you think about the site?
> Did you learn from it anything from it?
> Does it make you think about space differently than before you saw the website?

Add your thoughts about the website as a comment. Please comment in full and complete sentences.

Here are some other space related links you might also find interesting (feel free to comment about the links too):

Space Shuttle fact site
NASA video gallery
Solar System

Have a great vacation...

Remember - Comment as "Name/URL" and use your first name and last initial (proper capitalization, no URL)- please respond in full and complete sentences - double check your work before posting your comment.

I think the website is interesting.
I learn that Earth is 1 AU from the Sun and Saturn is 9.61 AU and Jupiter is 4.95 AU from the Sun. It makes me think about space MORE differently because I didn't know much about space and there's so many to learn on that website.

I think the site is REALLY cool. More than I expected, too, but I wished for more info about space beyond our solar system. I discovered a new measurement,AU,(or how many Earths from the Sun.) But,it made me feel the same about space, and that is how cool, and wonderful it is.

There are some galaxy very far far away. But what we do have is evidence that astronomers have pushed the Hubble space telescope. We are looking back through 96% of the life of the universe. Some galaxy that are 500 millons years old or more maybe there are life in others galaxys.

I think this site is AWSOME!!I learned more than I expected, but atleast I learned some stuff. It made me think about space much diferent but now I know how space looks like.

I think Solar System Scope is a really cool site. I like when you spin the planets. It tells you exactly where it would land. That is super cool. Also it tells you when you spin it right and it tells you where it would land in the future. If you spin it left, though, it would tell you where it landed in the past.

That website Solar System Scope is cool. It's cool because it shows you cool things. It shows you where earth is close to,it even shows the names of the planets to.

I think that the website is cool and helpful because it tells you the distance from one planet to another and shows you where all the planets are. Before I went on this website I didn't think of it this interesting. Now I feel like I want to go back to the website and stay on it all day! Did you know that from saturn to the sun is 9.62 AU? I didn't know that and I wonder how big is an AU?

I think this website is really cool. I learned that the distance between Earth and Pluto is 32.92 AU. I don't know how big an AU is, so I can't imagine how big the distance is. But I know an AU is extremely huge because the distance between Earth and Pluto is definitly a long way a part and it only takes 32 AU!

I know a lot about space. But I learned what s.s.s means it means
solar system scope. And I never
knew there were so many ways to look at the solar system.I wish it gave me more information about distance.

The SSS website is cool because it shows you the planets and how they go around the sun. i learned that the Earth is 379,342 KM away from the moon. it did not make me feel different about space because i know
a lot about space.

I went to the SolarSystemScope and saw all the planets and it was so cool. I made time start and all the planets moving around in circles and I saw that you can make the planets go around by seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, mouths and years. I learned that from Jupiter to Pluto the distance is 35.07 Astronomical Units. I wish I was in a rocket ship and fly to space.

I think this site is so cool because I never know that the planets liked so alike but they have different temperature.I never know that Uranus was the color blue.I wish I could the first girl to set foot on Mars.

Ithink solar system scope is very cool.Whenever I move a planet to the left all theother planets follow it.IT Is the same thing when you move it to the right all the other planest follow it also.
When I move the planet up i get to see what Is underneat. When I move a plannet down i get to see hat is ontop.

Izayah O said...

I like the website Solar System Scope because it gives you a video of how the planets rotate.I learned that Uranus is blue, I thought it was the same color as Mars.I thought space was boring at first but once I saw that video it inspired me, I thought who could be the first one to set foot on the moon or if there were any more planets out there. I thought if any one had set foot on Mars or if any one had seen any aliens there.

What I think about the website is its interesting and cool. What I learned is the distance from pluto to the sun is 36.33 AU and the distance from saturn to mercery is 9.3 AU.It doesn't make me think different about space before I saw the website because I already knew how it looked.

Mckenzie R said...

I think the website is really cool. It is cool because, not only was I able to look at the planets in 3D, I also felt as though I was in space. What is awesome is that both the moon and the Earth are the same distance from the sun (which is 1.01 AU) Yes I do think differently about space. I thought that Pluto did not exist, however now I know that it does exist.

I adore the site!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I unfotunatly learned a ton. I never knew the site could go back to ... um... uh... um... the millenium and ... um... the future. And no the site never changed my idea on space.

P.S. I never knew the site existed! I never whished it did.(This is all my opinion.)

I learned that some planets are just out in the middle of nowhere! I also learned that Pluto is like VERY VERY far away from all the other planets. The website was pretty cool. I just got a spy glass on my trip to St. Louis. I could use it to help me see planets in the sky.

It was fun because rotating planets
was cool.I thoght jupiter was big
but not that big.

I really thought the solar system scope website was Cool. I Learned That every year the planets go around the sun. Earth is Really close to the moon. Uranus and Saturn is much much more away from the other planets. I didn't know that Uranus and Saturn was so far away from the other planets. But it looks really cool.

i think the video was interesting because of the clothes they wore and where the space shuttle travled.I think being on the first space shuttle might have been scary because maybe something might have gone wrong. I think the nmost interesting part of the video was watching the space shuttle going up.

This is the most incredible space website I have ever seen! I saw what it was like to be in space. The sun made me dizzy from moving around!

I think this Solar System site is very cool because they show the distances of each planet. It shows you how each planet rotates. They show 3 different views. They show the heliocentric view, geocentric view, and panoramic view. That is why I think that Solar System site is very cool.

Yes, I did learn things from it. I learned how many planets there are in the solar system. The 9 planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. I learned that the planet distance unit measure in AU, which means Astronomical Unit equals 149,598,000 KM. The distance from the Sun to Mercury is 0.46 Au, the Sun to Venus is 0.73 AU, Sun to Earth is 1.01 AU, Sun to Mars is 1.4 AU, Sun to Jupiter is 4.95 AU, Sun to Saturn is 9.61 AU, Sun to Uranus is 20.08 AU, Sun to Neptune is 30.01 AU, and Sun to Pluto is 32.02 AU. I learned how the planets rotate. For example, the planet Earth rotates it self while rotating around the Sun. Also, the moon rotates around the Earth. The farther they are the slower they rotate around the sun. Those are the things that I learned from it.

Yes, it makes me to think differently about space then before I saw the Solar System website. I did not know there were 9 planets. I did not know what NASA meant. NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA made space ships and space shuttles. They send astronauts into space. I did not know what AU meant. I never knew the planets were so big. I never knew those things until I looked at the Solar System website.

I really like the website because all you have to do to look at the planets is click on it two times. And I like the little thing at the beginning showing you the part of the website you are in. I learned that the earth and the moon are about 400,000Km apart.

I found the website to be very cool. I liked how the planets look and how beautiful the stars are. I was able to view the Solar System in a different and more real way. I also learned important facts such as how far some planets are from the Sun.
The closest planet to the sun is the Mercury. It's 0.47(AU) from the Sun.
The farthest planet from the sun is Neptune. It is 30.01(AU) from the Sun.
I really enjoyed this website, and learned some facts that I didn't know before.

I LOVE it. Now I think space is really cool. I learned that some planets orbit faster around the sun than others. I think the constellations are super cool because they look interesting.

I thought the site was cool. I didn't know there was so many planets and stars. The solar system is so big.

I think the website is interesting. Because it shows you a lot of things like rotating planets or you can zoom in on a planet. You can also take your mouse and connect planets to see how far away they are.

I think I learned a lot from the website because I did not really know much about the solar system.

The site kind of makes me think a little more about the solar system then I did before.

Jahlia.H said...

1. I think that the site is cool because I can see all the stuff that are in the solar system.

2. What I learned from the solar system was the order of the planets with the moon being closest to the sun.

3. Yes the website made me feel differently because I never saw space in 3D.

Jayson C said...

The site is cool because it tells you about the planets and the solar system. It tells you the distance between the sun and all it's planets. It shows you the surface of all the planets and you can rotate them. thats cool! the site shows that it takes the earth one year to go completely around the sun. In my room my ceiling fan has a picture of earth on it that looks similar to the earth in this solar system website. After visiting this site I can visiualize what our solar system looks like because I saw it.

Jay T. said...

I think that the site was very interesting. It shows how the planets are aranged and how the distance of the sun can be different. I learned that Pluto does not travel in a circle like the other planets. It makes me think that the solar system is very organized and is also very large.

Alyssa V said...

I think this website was really cool. I learned how the planets move. It was especially nice to see them in 3D. After visiting this site I'm more interested than ever in space and the solar system.

Mantis H. said...

I think the site looks very cool and interesting, I never thought the stars made so many constellations. I think is a good way to learn about space and all the planets and everything. I learned to look at the planets and where their places are. I didn't know the moon was so small and that it was that close! I also though jupiter had a ring cause people said, but it is saturn that has the ring. This site makes me think different because I didn't know that the planets looked like this.

Teresina T. said...

I was able to see how all of the planets were lined up. It was cool how they let you zoom in on each planet. It was sort of like you were on that planet.

Hi mr. casal I really miss computer class. It is my favorite class in p.s.10. I miss you and everyone in p.s.10 do you know who teaches 4-407 because I went on the schools website and it did'nt tell me so if you know who teaches 4-407 just email my mom krssy829@aol.com and if you don't know I will find out .

Jasmin B,
I don't know who will be teaching 4-407 in September, those things might not be sorted out just yet. Calling the Main Office would probably be the best way to find out.

Glad to hear you miss my class. Hope you are having a fun summer. See you in September!
