4th & 5th Graders - The technology of movies...

Technology and computers are used in almost all aspects of daily life. One place computers are used, but you may not realize, is in making animated movies.

A good friend of Mr. Casal's, Craig, was the Production Manager on Dreamworks latest movie, How to Train Your Dragon. He played an important role in getting the movie from ideas on the page to the big screen. Craig has generously agreed to answer your questions, here on the blog, about the movie.

Here is the assignment:

There are 2 options - 1) Go out and see How to Train Your Dragon in the theater or 2) Watch the trailer online.

If you do not want to go see the movie you can see the trailer here:
Click on this link: http://www.howtotrainyourdragon.com/
Click on "View Trailer"

Once you have watched the trailer or gone to the movie you must answer the following questions, and ask at least one question of your own, for Craig to answer, about the movie.

1) How does this movie look different than others (animated or not) you have seen?
2) What role do you think computers and technology play in making a movie like this?
3) Ask Craig a question... did watching the movie make you wonder about anything? Did you
see something in the movie or trailer you want to learn more about?

*(UPDATE - Craig has been answering the questions - look at the comments section, Craig's first response is about 7 down from the top - read his post. Read all the previous comments to see if your question was already asked, and if so, think of a different question to ask.
Craig has already answered the "how do you make it 3D" and "where did the story come from" questions... look for those answers in the comments....
)*

All replies must be posted by the time you arrive in Mr. Casal's Computer Lab after the vacation.

Have a great Spring Break!

Remember - Comment as "Name/URL" and use your first name and last initial (proper capitalization, no URL)- please respond in full and complete sentences - double check your work before posting your comment.

Hi all, thanks for the questions. Mr. Casal and I have been friends for a long time now and I've been working at dreamworks for over 10 years since shortly after graduating from college. Here's the answer to some of your questions.

Nicolas, a normal animated movie takes about 4 to 5 years to make from the moment we first get started on the movie. Normally, you start actually animating the movie and adding life to the characters about 20 months before the movie comes out. It took a little longer for us to find the story we wanted to tell so we started only 12 months ago, so it wasn't as much time.
Natasha and Ileeanna T, the idea for the movie came from a book called How to Train Your Dragon written by a British author named Cressida Cowell. We used her story as a jumping off point to start our movie. Once our directors started on the film, they wrote the story that's in the movie. Even though it's different from the story she originally wrote, she loves the movie.
Destiney, I really enjoyed making this movie. It was a great experience working with the over 300 people who worked every day on this film with me. They were amazing artists and a real treat to work with. Every day we got to see something new and beautiful and that made it fun to go into work every day.
Samuel, it takes a lot of people to make the dragons look so real. First, someone in the art department makes a drawing of the dragon that we use as a guide. Then a modeler builds the dragon in the computer. Someone called a surfacer adds the skin. Another person we call a character TD adds the skeleton inside the dragon. An animator makes the dragon move and finally, a lighter goes in and adds the lights to the scene to make the dragon look like it belongs in the world. It takes a lot of people who are very smart and talented to do it.
Ranen, 3D movies can be very hard to make. We wanted to make you feel like you were flying with Toothless and Hiccup when they are up in the air. But, at the same time, we wanted to make sure that we didn't make anyone sick by making it too lifelike so it took a bit of practice. We would often times take pieces of the movie into our movie theater at work and watch some of the movie to see if it hurt our eyes or gave us a headache. We have someone that we worked with named "Captain 3D" who is an expert on 3D that helped us a lot.

Keep the questions coming and I'll try to answer them as I can.

Natasha R. said...

1. I think it looks different from other movies because it is set in a Viking community.

2. I think computers and technology are used to animate the characters so they aren't just pictures.

3. My question is... How did you think of such an interesting plot?

Mr. Casal said...

Thanks for the post Craig!

That was a very detailed explanation. I had no idea the movie was based on a British book. Very interesting.

What were the favorite parts from the movie?I want to know.

Craig said...

Natasha R,
I didn't actually come up with the plot myself. But, to answer your question, our writers, who were also the directors, are very talented people who started with the question of what story they were trying to tell and built around that.
Evelyn,
That's such a hard question to answer. I look at the movie now and every shot (all 1,630 of them) in it has a story to me about when we sat together to figure out how to make it. I think my favorite moment in the movie though is a sequence that we called Forbidden Friendship. It's where Hiccup and Toothless first bond. I remember the first time it was shown to me in story boards. We all knew at that moment that we had a very special film when we saw it. I can tell you that I've seen the movie over 30 to 40 times now and there are still moments that give me goosebumps. And of course, there's always the moment when I see my name go by on the screen at the end during the credits. That's still exciting and rewarding to me.

1. The movie looks different because the characters are animated but the background looks realistic.
2.I think computers and technology helped animate this movie
3.Craig have you ever worked on a different movie and got confused with this.

Emily C said...

1. I think this movie is different than others because the effects of the flying dragon are much different than in the other movies, and it is in 3-D. So the 3-D contributes to the effects because usually in the movies I have seen that are in 3-D, something is getting thrown and it seems like it's coming at you, but in this case the dragon actully looke like it is flying under you!
2. I think the role that computers take in an animated movie is very imprtant because the computers pretty much do everything like: create the characters and control what the characters do and say, also make the characters walk, run and move in different ways.
3. Craig, what does your role in making a movie feel like to you and do you have several jobs in the process of making a movie?

Alexis R said...

The move looks different because I never seen a movie with dragons. The role I think computers and technology is a very big role because if that wasn't invented then we shoulden't have moves like this. Craig is funny.

Emily,

Every day was a little different on the film. The main thing I did every day was making sure everyone who was working on the film knew what the goals for the week were. As a production person, I did a little bit of whatever it took to get it done. Some days it was making sure we were on schedule with the film, some days it was helping to give tours to the actors and some days it was figuring out what to get the crew for lunch on a Saturday.
Saim,
It's tough to explain exactly how we make the movie 3D without a visual presentation but I'll try to explain it anyways. We basically render every frame of the film twice in the computer. Once for the left eye and once for the right eye. We overlay the images with a slight shift so that some parts of the image appear to go into the screen or come off the screen. When you look at it without glasses, it appears blurry. When you put on the special glasses, it helps to filter the image so that your eyes see in depth and see it in 3D. If one of the frames doesn't render in the computer properly, you see different images in each eye and it gives you a big headache.

Naima Mamataz said...

1)This movie is shown different then other movies because it is in 3D, with lots of mixed emotions. Such funny times, sad times, happy times and much more. This movie also has a theme set on for the boy so he can get the theme or point across to everyone.

2) The role of computers and technology plays on this movie is the works of editing, and the use of computers to computerize the whole movie that looks real. With many actions done, this movie looks real because it was done by the computers. This movie looks intense due to the great job from technology and also from the actors/actresses voice.

3) My Question is... How was the creation of the dragons/characters done? Overall, how long did the creation of the movie take?

Really exciting movie! Love the concept.

Raven W. said...

1. The way the movie looks different than others is that you don't usually see anyone trying to train a fire breathing dragon.Which is rather unique.
2. The role that I think that the computers and technology play is that the movie is in 3D and also, the characters are not real life characters so the computers make them look like cartoon and real life characters at the same time.
3. My question to Craig is,did you get the idea for your movie from any other animated film.

Matthew R. said...

1) This movie looks different than others because you can make more expressions and things when you anime it.
2)I think the computers play the top role, with them being able to create the whole thing, and anime it, why wouldn't it be the most important?
3) One question I have for Craig is, how did you get the idea to make non-threatning dragons in the first place?

Abdelrahman Osman said...

-It is different from all the other movies because "How To Train Your Dragon" is 3D and it gives a feeling that the dragons are real and flying right at you.
-Without Computers and technology, I do not think the film would look so real and of course without technology people would not be able to create 3D movies.
-The thing I am curious about and really would like to ask Craig about is what is your favorite character in the movie?

Christian Gonzalez said...

1) How To Train Your Dragon is different than other movies I have seen because first of all it is in 3-D,it is a kids movie about dragons,a boy isn't scared of a dragon. A few other reasons are a small young boy ends up riding, saving, and building a wing for a very large, and unknown dragon.
2)I believe the roles the computers played in the movie How To Train Your dragon were the characters. The only real part of the characters were the vioces.
3) One of the many questions I want to ask Craig is who long did it take to finish this movie to make it ready to be seen by an audience?

Craig said...

Malcolm,

The animators animate both the humans and the dragons at the same time. It was actually very difficult for our clothing department because they had to fold the characters clothes around where they were sitting on the dragons. Otherwise, the clothes would go right through the dragons and would have looked wrong.

3)The question I have for Craig is,did the animation for the dragons take alot of time for every movement to be exactly right?

Lin,

On average, an animator could animate about a second of film every day and a half. They would usually do a early test to show the directors to make sure they were going in the right direction with a shot. But after animation, the shot still had to go through clothing and lighting before it was complete.

Garrett,
We were very happy making this movie. The crew was amazing to work with and even though it was challenging we were very proud of this film.

Adam,

As the production manager I helped to supervise the over 400 people who worked on the film. I worked with them all to make sure that they were aware of the schedule and to help come up with solutions to problems that otherwise would have delayed our schedule. There were two other production managers on the film. The areas I focused on were more animation, fx, lighting and the actual delivery of the final images. As an interesting side note, one of the other production managers on the film went to college with Mr. Casal and myself too!

I thought that like the movie UP, this movie used an advanced story line , in this movie it gave a story line like never before, the only way I see this movie is different is it gave a story line of a weak, and small character(Main Character) like in the following, Tarzan, UP, and Alladin. In these they have strong and heroic characters. The animation was more real than in some movies I have seen.

2.I think that computers help the movie really come to life. In some cases even better than the older way of making animated cartoons, but backfires in not having real actors you can learn from.

Jason T,

I started at Dreamworks in 1999 a year after graduating college and became a production assistant on the Road to El Dorado. I've worked on 9 feature films now and eventually reached the position of production manager after a lot of hard work and a lot of great people teaching me how to succeed at my job. Just because I finished school over ten years ago doesn't mean I still don't learn new things every day. And yes, it was a lot of fun making the movie. I feel very fortunate to have a job that I enjoy every day.

It seems a lot of people are asking the question of how long the movie took to make. Normally, pre-production on a film is 1.5 years and production is another 2 years. We had a long pre-production period but only one year for production. It was pretty crazy but with the whole amazing crew working together we were able to succeed.

Jade,

All films are hard to make but they each have their own challenges. We believe that every film should push the envelope and show things to you that you have never seen before. If you go back and look at Shrek 1 and then see Shrek 4 later this year, you can see how much more complex everything looks even though they are the same characters.

Tara,

We use special computer programs to help the characters move. The animators go in and tell it how to move and what to do and then the computer uses a lot of computing power to render out each frame that the animators have worked on.

I've worked on 9 movies at Dreamworks. A few of the most recent ones are Monsters vs. Aliens, Madagascar 2, Bee Movie and Over the Hedge. They were all different experiences but great ones There were a lot of reasons that we were able to make the movie in a shorter amount of time but the primary reason was the amazing crew that all worked incredibly hard on this film.

Samantha,

We plan when these movies are done out of when they will be in the theater and set that date early on. That way, we can start making audiences aware of it as we get closer to the release date. We sort of work backwards from there knowing when we have to be finished and from that, we know when we will have to start making it. We build a lot of schedules to make sure we are on schedule.

Andrew,
We use a lot of technology to make the movie. Everything is finished on the computers. We have lots of programs that we use to help all the departments.

Jaylynn,
The thing I've enjoyed most is hearing how much people are enjoying the movie. It really makes all the hard work that more special when people like the film.

3. Did the animators read the book?

1) This movie is different from other movies because it is in 3D. Also, a viking and a dragon usually won't be compatible, but in this case he is friends with the dragon.

2) The computers and other technology took a BIG part in this movie. This whole entire movie is animated except for the voice's. Why? You thought those people were actually humans! Well in the movie there vikings in real life there just animated!

3) Graig, did you like working with this movie: How To Train Your Dragon 3D

Aaron,

I got my job because of my experience in school. Some of my friends were older and had moved out to Los Angeles before me. They started working at Dreamworks and when I moved out there, they got me an interview. I did okay in the interview and started working at Dreamworks a week later. That was in April of 1999.
Kalea,
I know some of the animators read the book. We had the author visit us while we were making the movie so that she could see what we were doing.

1. I thought that the 3D effect was great, it didn't even feel like you had 3D glasses on. I thought the movie was great too. I thought the animation was a lot more different in a good way. Alice In Wonderland had the same of 3D effect. I thouht the vision of the movie was good to, because when I saw the movie the details on the Hiccup,Toothless and the rest of the characters can really be seen.such as Hiccups frecles ,and toothlesses scales, and the designs on Astrids clothing.
2. Craig, I was wondering who was the writer and director for the film? Who was the cartoonist? Did you like being a part of the film?

1. "How to Train Your Dragon" was different from other digitally animated movies because it's having a little of everything: action, emotion, and fear factor.

2. Digitally creating the characters and editing scenes depended on technology.

3. First, thank you, Craig, for taking time out to post answers to our questions. Where did you go to college? What was your major and did it help you with your current job?

1)I went to see the movie and it was very realistic.Especially when he was flying on the dragon his hair looked real blowing in the wind.
2)Animated movies used to take a long time drawing and painting each frame.By using computer technology artists are able to copy the frame and make small changes, and the quality is better also.3D makes it even better!
3)Craig,how were you able to make the characters facial expressions so realistic?

Ty,
I went to Boston University and majored in television production along with Mr. Casal. While there, I got experience working on a tv show that the students did. Some friends I made there were older and graduated before me. They moved out to Los Angeles and got a job at dreamworks. After I graduated, I moved out here and they helped me get a job at Dreamworks as well.
Saria and Abdul,
We spend a lot of time to make the characters believable. One of the things that we do is record the actors when they are recording their lines. The animators will study the video to try and get the mannerisms of the character into the performance. The surfacers and lighters then spend a lot of time working to make the skin look realistic.
Sah-Kiel,
I was excited to work on Dragons because a lot of the leadership of the show was made up of a group of us that had previsouly worked together on Over the Hedge. That really made it easy when there were problems to work together to solve them.
